The Vision Group incorporated as the New Vision Printing &
Publishing Company Limited (NVPPCL), started business in March 1986. It is a
multimedia business housing newspaper, magazines, internet publishing,
television, radio broadcasting, commercial printing, advertising and
distribution services. NVPPCL is listed on the Uganda Stock Exchange, with an
expected turnover of over UGX 60 billion (FY 2010/2011).
Job Summary: The Sub Editor
will ensure quality, structure and content written in standard Luo.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Edit/Improve stories in Luo i.e. grammar
    and flow to ensure that there are no obstacles in communication and that
    the stories are understandable to average Luo speakers.
  • The jobholder will edit/improve stories to
    ensure that they are free of defamation, libel and slander and have the
    facts right.
  • Laying and designing pages to make the
    lead story stand out and direct the readers.
  • Write catchy headlines in Luo or rewrite
    headlines in Luo to attract the reader to the story.
  • Proof read pages before they are saved to
    minimize mistakes and reduce errors.
  • Write captions for pictures and ensure
    they are clear in order to give the readers a quality paper.
  • Write weekly reports on feedback of the
    weekly Rupiny paper in order to continuously improve the product.
  • Mentor and train reporters on house style
    and editorial policy.
  • Attend weekly product evaluation meeting
    to review the newspaper for errors, improve design and brainstorm on
    product improvement.
  • Generate story ideas to help reporters
    write stories in time that are catchy to the readers.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Vision Group
    Sub Editor job placement must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication,
    Arts or any other related degree within the Social Sciences field.
  • Computer proficiency in InDesign,
    Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Quark Express and Microsoft office programs.
  • Proficiency in Luo and English Language is
    a must.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication
    skills.
  • Keen interest in leisure and light content
    will be an added advantage.
  • Previous exposure and experience in
    working with a media organization is desirable.
  • Ability to guide and build a strong team,
    while supporting other members to grow their skills.
