About UVRI-IAVI:
The UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine
Program (the Program), founded in 2001, is a not for profit organization with
offices and research facilities based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in
Entebbe. The Program’s main activities are conducting research, building
capacity and providing advocacy for HIV/AIDS vaccine as well as molecular and
epidemiological work toward HIV prevention. The Program is mainly funded by the
International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), USA but also receives funding
from other donors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability
to effectively deal with any problems in open waters. - Responsible
for the safe operation and navigation of the boat. - Transport
personnel and equipment by vessel across water including anchoring, handling
ropes, chains, steering the boat to safe parking. - Responsible
for the safety of the boat and all people and equipment/supplies on board
while travelling on water - Maintain
good working condition of the boat and equipment on board, such as
engines, radio calls, torches, ropes, fire extinguishers, and life
jackets. - Maintain
records of trips and their duration. - Train
and guide staff on water safety. - Advise
on water travel times. - Drive
UVRI-IAVI vehicles for the transportation of authorized passengers and delivery
and collection of mail documents - Perform
day to day maintenance of assigned vehicles and ensure that UVRI-IAVI
vehicles are road worthy maintained up to established security standards
and kept clean. - Log
official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes - Prepare
monthly fuel and maintenance reports - Perform
other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The
ideal candidate must hold an ordinary level certificate with at least a principal pass in English - At
least three years’ experience in water craft and Driving. - Good
knowledge of Lake Victoria landing sites and islands - The
candidate should have good communication skills and teachable - Water
safety skills is an added advantage. - Must
be prepared for long periods of travel on water, away from home including
weekends. - Be
organized and have a strong eye for detail, able to find sound reasons why
the boat may not be water worthy, advice on travel times and why any
equipment/persons would be dangerous. - Ability
to swim at least 50 meters is an added advantage - Valid
driving permit with minimum driving class of B, knowledge of driving rules
and regulations - Valid
driving permit with minimum driving class of CM and B, knowledge of
driving rules and regulations - Good
knowledge of English - Knowledge
in MS Word and Excel is an added advantage - Ability
to perform other roles i.e. Multi-tasking
