About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus
Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the
Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research
of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.

Job Summary: The Scientist
A – POPVAC Project will offer scientific leadership and ensure timely and
credible execution of project activities. This position requires willingness to
travel and work in island communities and rural communities for fieldwork.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participating in strategic planning for POPVAC and for other activities in the
I-Vac Programme; generating ideas for new research studies - Contributing to the design of research studies
and taking an active role in: - Writing grant applications
- Writing study protocols & SOPS
- Gaining approval from regulatory bodies
- Developing detailed implementation plans and resourcing budgets
- Sourcing products and equipment
- Recruiting and training study team members
- Leading the implementation of the research
study, ensuring that: - Plans, protocols and procedures are reliably followed
- Research is conducted according to best
practice/high standards - Research volunteers are treated ethically and
with respect and compassion - Data is entered accurately and reliably and
data security routines are developed and implemented - Participating in data analysis and project
evaluation; feeding lessons learned back into the design of new projects - Contribute to writing of reports and organising
Trial Steering Committees - Participating in the roll-out of the Communication Strategy (particularly by
publishing papers, presenting at meetings and conferences, and carrying
out community education and engagement activities) - Managing study resources (including finances,
HR, equipment & facilities), ensuring efficient and ethical usage and complying with all
research sponsor accountability requirements - Leading the Study Team, in a manner that
empowers them to operate according to best practice. - Providing regular and timely feedback to the
Programme Head / Principal Investigator
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Medical Degree
- A Master’s degree in Medicine, Epidemiology,
Statistics or Public Health or similar; a PhD is of added advantage - Three years’ experience in a clinical research
setting. - Experience of supervising clinical staff.
- Experience and Certification in Good Clinical
Research Practice - Evidence of contributing to high impact
peer-reviewed publications in health related research is of an added
advantage
