About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda
Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from
the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the
research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research.
It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical
trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has
generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and
practice that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer
reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary: The
Nursing Officer will provide medical care to patients on ART who attend the GPC
study clinic and to make ART drug orders in time for all patients on ART.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Tasked with medical Management of sick
    study participants on ART according to national clinical guidelines
  • Review and update clinic supplies and
    make requisitions appropriately.
  • Ensure proper clinic data collection in
    line with Kyamulibwa GPC clinic.
  • Prepare regular clinic reports and
    suggest improvement in the clinic management
  • Collect blood samples for monitoring
    viral loads of participants on ART in        accordance
    with the Uganda ART guidelines
  • Track laboratory results and take
    appropriate action.
  • Ensure that ARVs and drugs for TB are
    stored safely as per the SOPS
  • Offer relevant health education to the
    study communities.
  • Provide counselling to clients when
    needed.
  • Perform any other duty allocated to
    him/her by the supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant for the Medical Research
    Council (MRC) UK / UVRI Nursing Officer job placement must
    hold a Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery/comprehensive
  • Short courses on ART, research methods,
    GCP training, counselling and monitoring persons on ART are an added
    advantage
  • Two years’ experience in clinical and
    research setting providing ART to study participants
  • User knowledge in computer applications
