About US:

The Atomic
Energy Council (AEC) is a government statutory body established by the Atomic
Energy Act No.24 of 2008, Laws of Uganda to regulate the peaceful applications
of ionizing radiation for the protection and safety of the individuals, society
and the environment from dangers resulting from ionizing radiation.

 

Job Summary:  The Radiation Protection Officer shall carry
out inspections of regulated practices, verify and review application forms for
authorization, assist in the development of regulations, regulatory guides and
technical guides and coordinate radiation protection & safety advisory
among others.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Review the operators’ technical submission to assess
compliance with relevant safety objectives, principles and criteria.

·       
Verify and review notification and application forms
submitted to Council

·       
Prepare and collect data required for processing various
licenses; application forms from prospective licensees of ionizing radiation
for consideration.

·       
Participate in preparing programmes of regulatory
inspections of ionizing radiation practices and implement or co-ordinate their
implementation.

·       
Conduct inspections in facilities/practices to assess
radiation safety and security conditions and compliance with established laws,
plans, protocols and manuals. Process inspection findings, produce reports and
table them to the superior for consideration.

·       
Conduct enforcement actions on non-compliant facilities.

·       
Draft licenses and permits for compliant facilities.

·       
Establish and maintain strategic linkages with designated
personnel in facilities to monitor compliance or violation. Make follow-ups
with such facilities for implementation of requirements and recommendations to
improve radiation safety.

·       
Establish and maintain records for quality control and
quality assurance for regulated practices.

·       
Provide support on intervention relating to radiological
emergencies, as may be appropriate.

·       
Carryout research in the field of nuclear science and
technology

·       
Report to the supervisor any complaints raised from
facilities

·       
Develop, review and update regulatory documents including
but not limited to safety guides, guidelines, codes, protocols, standards and
regulations.

·       
Participate in Radiation Protection and Safety training.

·       
Maintain and update registers and other associated
databases for licenses, facilities & practices, inspections, enforcements,
radiation sources etc.

·       
Participate in public awareness activities.

·       
Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to
time by the Senior staff or any other authorized person.

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

 

·       
The applicant must hold an Honours Bachelor’s degree
(Second Class Upper and above) in Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences,
medical radiography/imaging, Radiation Protection or any closely related field
from a recognized university.

·       
Qualification in radiation protection and safety and/or a
master’s degree in related field is an added advantage.

·       
At least two (02) years of experience working in the area
of regulation of practices involving ionising radiation or closely related
field with a reputable institution.
