Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
The GIS and Mapping
Assistant working under Assessment and GIS Expert, will be required to
undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:-
  • Assist the UNOPS Assessment and GIS expert to produce a clear and
    transparent  georeferenced
    information database and maps;
  • Assist in verification and recording of all field data from
    surveyors; manage data related to road network, services and
    infrastructures (health, schools, market, water points, and other social
    facilities)
  • Assist in gathering, integrating existing spatial data, determining
    how best the information can be displayed using GIS and in producing map
    template;
  • Assist in analyzing data with spatial analysis for the accessibility
    and infrastructures mapping undertaken (analysis of satellite image,
    production of list of GPS coordinate for the villages, facilities,
    critical points etc)
  • Assist in making the Rural Access Index calculation, in producing
    and printing maps following the instruction of the Assessment and GIS
    expert
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluation of assessments;
Other
responsibilities:
  • Contribute in intermediate and final reports;
  • Assist the Assessment and GIS expert to provide trainings in the use
    of GIS tools;
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Manager and team;
Key Results:
  • Counties/Region/East Africa dataset on accessibilities,
    infrastructures, facilities
  • A georeferenced dataset (layers of information on infrastructure)
  • List of critical points with GPS coordinates verified by the
    surveyors
  • List of infrastructure
  • Road networks
  • Analyzed and mapped GPS trace of the inspected roads
  • Summarized statistics on data collected and analyzed (nb of houses,
    nb of critical points, nb water cross path…)
  • Organized collection of georeferenced pictures/photos
  • Organized list of electronically filled forms with GPS coordinate of
    visited infrastructures
  • Maps and schematics services/facilities assessment;
  • Information sheet on infrastructures/road sections/facilities/services
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills; resourceful, pro-active, maturity of
    judgement and behavior skills;
  • Ability to build and sustain effective work relationship with
    subordinates and peers to achieve common goals;

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations Office for Project
    Services (UNOPS) GIS and Mapping Assistant job opportunity should have
    completed secondary education. Relevant professional diploma or Bachelor’s
    degree.
  • Secondary education completed and a minimum of 5 years’ experience
    in Geospatial, spatial analysis and mapping is required; 
  • Experience in use on android smartphone and its apps, computer
    software or its equivalent is desired;
  • Experience in collecting electronic Geomapping data and in using
    tools in a multi-faceted program as well as using Management Information
    Systems (MIS) is required;
  • Experience in field 
    collection is desired;
  • Skills in Geospatial/ terrain analysis, Geographic Information
    System, ArcGIS,Spatial and Geographical database acknowledgement are
    essential;
  • Previous UN/NGO experience is an asset
  • Languages: Fluency
    in written and oral English required
