Job Summary: UN Women is looking for 1 online volunteer who will be responsible for editorial services, specifically making the Annual Report concise and digestible, and maximize its impact for external audiences.
The task will include the following responsibilities:
- Provide editing, proofreading, and rewriting (as necessary) services for 1) UN Women; and 2) UN Cooperation Framework Annual Reports.
- Make necessary revisions based on the UN editorial style manual.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The editor will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Copyediting, proofreading, identifying gaps in the information, restructuring, and rewriting in collaboration with the project teams as may be required.
- Correct spelling mistakes, typos and reflect appropriate usage of messaging with proper grammar and syntax.
- Content Reduction & Prioritization: Eliminate unnecessary detail while ensuring that key impact and results are prominent.
- Improve clarity, readability, and logical flow of sections.
- Formatting & Presentation – Ensure coherence and consistency in writing and apply consistent headings, numbering, and styles, ensuring appropriate positioning and number of boxes, figures and tables
- Language & Tone – Ensure concise, professional, and action-oriented language; remove jargon.
- The online volunteer will work under supervision of the Deputy Country Representative at UN Women Uganda
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Master’s Degree preferably in English Literature, Journalism, or related field; or
- Bachelor’s Degree can be substituted in lieu of Masters with substantial additional years of experience in the field of journalism, professional editing, content development, and/or professional training/ diplomas, etc.
Required experience
- At least 5 years of professional work experience in editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
- Candidates should have proven record in editing, copyediting, and proofreading knowledge products and communications materials for external audience, including but not limited to reports, publications, news articles, feature stories, policy briefs, and/or advocacy notes.
- Experience in writing and editing for international development and/or other UN agency documents is an asset.
- Familiarity with gender equality and women’s empowerment is desirable.
