About Organisation:
The Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is an indigenous medical organization that was established in 1991 as a limited liability not-for-profit Joint-venture between the Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Defense and Makerere University Medical School (now Makerere University College of Health Sciences). JCRC is located on plot 101 Lubowa Hill Off Entebbe Road P.O. Box 10005 Kampala.
Job Summary: The Research Pharmacist is responsible for preparing drugs, providing appropriate and comprehensive medicines information to JCRC clients as well as to the clinicians and non-health care professionals at JCRC. He/she shall process the importation of drugs; do inventory management of drugs and ensure proper disposal of unusable drugs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains responsibility for clinical investigational drug trials.
- Reviews protocols for JCRC investigational drug trials, as required.
- Liaises with principal investigators and/or trial coordinators/research assistants to establish pharmacy’s role.
- Communicates with, and trains staff anticipated to participate in any aspect of the clinical investigational drug trial.
- Maintains a pharmacy binder which contains a study summary, protocol, dispensing procedures, completed samples of required paperwork, dispensing checklist, and any other relevant materials for each investigational trial.
- Maintains responsibility for the management of the inventory for clinical investigational drug trials; orders, replaces and returns study materials, as required.
- Process the importation of the drugs for clinical trials and other projects.
- Carryout inventory management of drugs i.e. forecasting and monitoring of the drug stocks in order to avoid overstocking and stock outs.
- Process and organize the destruction of returned/ expired and other unusable drugs with National Drug Authority.
- Prepare standard operating procedures (SOP) for the pharmacy operations.
- Supervise and coordinate activities of the pharmacy technicians to ensure efficient pharmacy operations.
- Corresponds with the Sponsors of the clinical trials and Site Principal Investigators about study drug related issues.
- Participates in organizational planning meetings and provides in-put is required.
- Any other duties assigned by the Head Pharmacy or other relevant departmental head.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognized University.
- Prior experience working on Clinical Trials is required.
- Membership of Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda
- Registration with the Pharmacy Board
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive post-registration experience in Uganda and or East Africa.
- Prior experience in a clinical research environment is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of the Laws and regulations governing medicines use in Uganda is required.
