About Organisation:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a Public Limited Liability Company incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act (Cap 110). the Laws of Uganda and in conformity with the Electricity Act, 1999. UEGCL started operation on 1st April 2001 and is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda, with the head office located in Kampala. The mandate of UEGCL is to establish, acquire, maintain and operate electricity generation facilities as well as promote Research and Development in the Electricity generation sector while running the company on sound business principles.
Job Summary: Monitor and Maintain performance of Isimba HPP dam structures and related works in accordance with Dam Safety management system
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, schedule and execute all of dam safety related activities as per established dam safety management plans at the dams.
- Maintain an updated data base for all instrumentation readings and inspections performed for Isimba dam.
- Perform first level monitoring data on the performance of Isimba dam structures
- Develop and maintain effective strategies for maintaining all the instrumentation in good and sound conditions.
- Compile monthly and quarterly dam safety reports for submission to the Dam safety manager
- Budgeting for all Isimba dam safety related activities
- Implementation of the Emergency Preparedness Plan, by exercising the EPP with all relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure that the EPP for Isimba is regularly reviewed and kept up to date.
- Unsure that the dam safety management plans at Isimba are kept updated at all times.
- Ensure closure of audit finding that relate to dam safety for Isimba dam
- Ensure that the flood control equipment is kept in good conditions, tested regularly in accordance to the flood control equipment maintenance plan.
- Ensure that the gates are tested on backup systems and that the backup system are regularly well maintained
- Develop and implement proper storage all instrumentation and maintenance data collected.
- Develop and ensure implementation of the public safety management plans for the safety of the communities that host the hydropower dams
- Record, investigate and keep a data base of all public safety incidents at Isimba dam
- Develop and ensure the implementation of effective maintenance strategies for all hydraulic structures, water conveyance systems, powerhouses, dams and all civil structure installations.
- Ensure and Maintain quality, safety and environmental standards in all works under your supervision and in absence of such standards, you shall develop and implement such approved standards in line with ISO requirements.
- Develop and/or ensure implementation of effective strategies to manage, maintain and mitigate against any negative occurrences which may affect the hydropower plant reservoir, river/water systems and associated water catchment
- Liaise with other technical specialties including electrical, mechanical and business support disciplines to ensure timely achievement of the company’s objectives.
- Manage contractors and sub-consultants the company may place under your supervision.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
A strong academic background supported with:
- A minimum of an upper second Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Hydropower or other related) from a recognized university.
- Membership with UIPE is an added advantage.
- A master’s degree in hydropower, water resources, geotechnical or related Masters will be an added advantage
Related Job Experience: The Experience required to perform this job.
- At least 3 years relevant experience in undertaking performance assessments of dams, inspection of dam structures, reservoir monitoring activities, hydraulic structure engineering, geotechnical engineering of dams, dam maintenance activities, demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, management of teams and compliance in a regulated environment.
Additional Skills/Competences: In addition to the experience and educational requirements listed above
- Good working knowledge of civil engineering principles, standards and regulations applicable to hydraulic structures and dams.
- Excellent computer literacy skills.
