AVSI Foundation (AVSI) is an international NGO with headquarters in Italy, which has been active in Uganda since 1984. Its current activities are focused in the areas of education, health, livelihoods, and protection, nutrition and refugee programs in Uganda.
Job Summary: The Occupational Therapist will assess, treat, and provide follow-up for children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SB/H) in Gulu and neighboring districts. The successful candidate will work at the Rehabilitation Center at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Assessment & Treatment:
- Identify and assess children with SB/H in collaboration with physiotherapists and social workers.
- Develop treatment plans and patient files.
- Provide treatment and train parents/children in clean intermittent catheterization and bowel management.
Clinic Support:
- Mobilize and assist in bi-monthly CURE clinic visits.
- Follow up on children referred to CURE Hospital.
- Maintain relations with partners involved in SB/H management.
Referral & Outreach:
- Refer children for assistive devices and educational support.
- Refer parents for Income Generating Activity (IGA) programs.
- Conduct community outreach to sensitize leaders, health workers, and communities.
- Identify new clients and conduct home visits for children missing clinic appointments.
Parental Support:
- Set up and facilitate monthly meetings for the Parents Support Group (PSG).
- Train parents in critical areas of care and management.
Monitoring & Reporting:
- Monitor treatment outcomes and report to colleagues and the Programme Manager.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Educational Background:
- Diploma in Occupational Therapy from a recognized institution.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with children with physical disabilities.
Skills:
- Ability to work independently under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills.
- Fluency in English (oral and written).
