Job Summary:  The Orthopedic officer will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality and efficient Orthopedic services to clients at the settlement and district, ensuring that high standards are adhered to in assessments, handling of emergencies, treatment and administration of medicines according to the Uganda Ministry of Health guidelines.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, manage, and provide health education for orthopedic clients, ensuring appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Conduct necessary nursing procedures in collaboration with the nursing department.
  • Provide regular feedback to medical officers on the status and progress of orthopedic patients.
  • Participate in community sensitization activities to raise awareness about available orthopedic services.
  • Engage in community outreach initiatives such as integrated outreaches, community dialogues, and awareness campaigns.
  • Contribute to the capacity building of community-based health workers and other stakeholders through training sessions and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of clinic work plans to achieve program objectives.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of accurate and timely reports to supervisors and donors.
  • Facilitate client referrals and transfers in collaboration with relevant departments and stakeholders.
  • Adhere to professional codes of conduct, ethics, and organizational policies.
  • Promote infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in all work settings.
  • Ensure health, safety, and security within your area of operation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to enhance orthopedic service delivery.
  • Support the preparation of donor reports, providing input on orthopedic-related activities and outcomes.
  • Contribute to program monitoring, evaluation, and improvement efforts.
  • Uphold and promote IRC’s vision, mission, and values in all interactions and engagements.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by supervisors, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  

  • A Diploma in Orthopedic Medicine from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
  • Possession of a valid practicing license.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in a similar role, preferably with an international organization delivering Primary Health Care (PHC) services in humanitarian settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and coordinating health-related activities.
  • Proven experience in data and information management related to health services.
  • Proficiency in orthopedic procedures and care management.
  • Strong counseling skills to support patient care and rehabilitation.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for interaction with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Team-building skills to support cohesive and productive work environments.
  • Organizational and time management skills to handle multiple responsibilities efficiently.
  • Commitment to professional ethics and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural and humanitarian settings.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities under pressure.
  • Willingness to contribute to community outreach and capacity-building activities.
