About the Company:

Windle International Uganda (WIU) is an International Non-Governmental Organization managing Education programmes in refugee settlements in Uganda. WIU is the lead agency for education in 9 out of the 12 settlements, although we operate in all 12 settlements including Kampala. We work in close collaboration with Government of Uganda through the Office of the Prime Minister.

 

Job Summary:   Be directly responsible for undertaking the activities of agriculture/school gardening at the schools assigned to him/her, and the delivery and distribution of agriculture assistance, materials and items in accordance with the project description and budget provisions as detailed in the agreements, and as assigned by the Project Officer.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   The Project Assistant – Agriculture will be supervised by the Settlement Manager, for the execution of his/her duties, which shall include the following:

  • Work with the Settlement Manager to initiate and coordinate the planning of the Agriculture programming/ school gardening activities in liaison with other project staff, the school administration, as well as the community,
  • Ensure optimum utilization of Project resources at minimum cost for high-quality production in order to ensure continuity of the school feeding program.
  • In collaboration with the Settlement Manager, liaise, consult and work in partnership and cooperation with relevant District, sub-county departments and institutions, NGOs, CSOs, and local leaders in order to achieve the objectives, and facilitate project implementation of the agriculture programming/school gardening.
  • Take the lead in training and guiding project volunteers, youth and women on best agronomic and agribusiness practices to impart sufficient knowledge required for maximum crop management and high production.
  • Assist in the establishment of demonstration gardens and other agricultural innovations including pest management practices to protect biodiversity
  • Sensitize the community on the importance of school gardening as the only way through which the Children School feeding can be sustained over a long period of time and in the absence of donor funding.
  • Regularly visit, provide support supervision, and monitor the work of volunteers in all project sites.
  • Collect and tabulate field data on project activities, and present such data with respective reports. It is upon such evidence that a decision for the next course of action by management shall be made.
  • Adequately document, report and follow up on concerns regarding a safe and secure learning environment for children to ensure friendly structures for Children with Disabilities (CWDs).
  • Establish and strengthen market linkages to ensure that surplus produce from school gardens and community initiatives translates into income generation.
  • Train and support school and community participants in adopting sustainable agribusiness practices, focusing on crop diversity, market-oriented production, and value addition.
  • Develop and oversee systems for sustainable waste management in schools and communities, including composting organic matter.
  • Advocate for and implement climate-smart agricultural techniques such as conservation tillage, agroforestry, and crop rotation.
  • Implement agricultural innovations such as demonstration plots and irrigation systems to boost crop yields and support the continuity of school feeding programs.
  • Partner/ work with nutritionists to promote an understanding of balanced diets and food preservation techniques for food security
  • Ensure equitable participation of women, men, youth, and people with disabilities in all project activities, providing tailored support where necessary.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Education

  • A minimum diploma in Agriculture – with specialization in crop production/ Science from a recognized institution.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years’ hands-on experience in practicing agriculture, or practice of applicable agriculture on a similar project is required.

Skills:

  • Skills in set-up, installation and management of irrigation systems
  • Skills in diseases and pest management.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Interpersonal relationship
  • Skills in post-harvest management.
