About Organisation:
Jhpiego is an international non-profit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. The group was founded in 1973 and initially called the Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, but is now referred to simply as Jhpiego.
About USAID Project:
Jhpiego is implementing a five-year Urban Health Activity in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Activity aims to strengthen urban health systems and improve equitable health outcomes among all urban dwellers by working with districts, municipalities, and the Kampala Capital City Authority to provide quality primary healthcare services. It also focuses on optimizing available resources and enhancing private sector capacity to ensure sustainable improvements in health outcomes and a more resilient urban healthcare system. The Activity will address poor quality of care, congestion in public health facilities, uncoordinated referral system, weak community and surveillance structures, limited private sector capacity, and gaps in enabling environment results in poor health outcomes. The project’s key expected results include the following: improved access to and use of quality, maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH), nutrition, and malaria services and improved disease outbreak response.
Job Summary: The Driver will provide logistical/transport/office support for the Jhpiego office. This includes maintaining office vehicle(s), ensuring that the vehicle policies are adhered to, driving and assisting with other office duties. The Driver will maintain vehicle mileage and related records as required by Jhpiego policies. The Driver is expected to be flexible and work longer than office hours when in the field and departing/arriving from the field. Also, when not in the field the Driver is expected to report to assist with other office duties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Drive Jhpiego office vehicles on official trips as necessary.
- Deliver project equipment, supplies, and documents to designated locations within set timelines.
- Ensure the safety of all passengers in the vehicle whether they are staff, consultants or colleagues.
- Ensure early departure to/from the field to ensure that the car is driven in accordance with Jhpiego, GOU and USG policies, rules and regulations.
- Ensure that any office vehicle S/he drives meets all legal requirements
- Ensure that the office vehicle has the necessary equipment like spare tires, lifesavers, toolbox, first aid kit, etc. and is always kept clean.
- He/she should maintain the motor vehicle logs and monitor fuel consumption, mileage and other minor vehicle maintenance issues.
- Assist in packing training materials for field travel and while in the field, he/she will assist the Jhpiego team with other tasks.
- Assist with office functions like making photocopies of documents and binding, packing training materials for distribution when the need arises.
- Assist the Office Assistant when necessary: Answer the telephone, forwards calls, provide phone assistance for outgoing calls ensuring messages are taken clearly and accurately. Receive visitors and direct them as necessary.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Required Qualifications
- Minimum O-level education
- Valid Ugandan Driver’s License with classes B, CM, and DL.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum five years’ experience in driving in Uganda in an INGO.
- Experience driving for/in USG funded projects or embassy/mission.
- Certificate in Defensive Driving.
