About the Company:

The AIDS Information Centre -Uganda is a catalytic not-for profit Non-Governmental Organization established on 14th February,1990 to provide Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services to the population of Uganda. AIC was the pioneer HIV Counselling and Testing Centre in Africa. Over the last 33 years, AIC has since evolved into a thought-leader in HIV programming, Health Systems Strengthening and Knowledge Management. AIC currently has 10 Centers of Excellence spread across the country, which include: Arua (West Nile region), Lira (Mid North region), Soroti (North-Eastern region), Mbale (Mid-Eastern region), Jinja (Eastern region), Kampala (Central region), Mbarara (Western region), Kabale, Kanungu and Rukungiri (South-Western region).

 

About Program:

AIC Intends to implement an integrated high quality school program, to provide early detection, Care and Treatment for both communicable and non-communicable diseases for the children, adolescents and youths wellbeing. This will entail a comprehensive and contextualized package of health services that will include: TB Screening, Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing, Nutritional Assessment, Counselling and Support, Sexually Transmitted Infections, screening, diagnosis and early management, deworming, dental checkups, eye sight assessment, screening for skin diseases, HPV Vaccination for girls (10 years and above) to prevent cervical cancer, breast cancer screening, BMI measurements and NCD screening (Hypertension and Diabetes), mental health assessment, novel vaccination for Ebola, COVID-19, Viral Hepatitis and Monkey Pox, VMMC, kidney function testing and liver function testing. The program also aims to tackle cross cutting issues including health education on climate change and mitigation needs, Infection Prevention Control (IPC) and proper waste management practices at the learning institutions and surrounding communities.

 

Job Summary: The School Health Project Officer will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and evaluating school-based health programs aimed at improving the physical, mental, and social well-being of students in Uganda. He/she will ensure that the key stakeholders are mobilized and health sensitization programs conducted to promote a growing culture of Wellness.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in their areas of jurisdiction.
  • Laise with school management to mobilize for their buy-in into the project.
  • Mobilize Teachers and Parents through Parents and Teachers Associations (PTAs) and school Board of Governors.
  • Ensure Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are signed with each of the identified schools.
  • Popularize the program through radio talk shows, Television shows, social media platforms.
  • Generate IEC materials, brochures and fliers for marketing the school health program.
  • Organize and coordinate the implementation of school health medical camps at the beginning of each campus semester, during visitation days, parent days, sports days, general assembly’s etc.
  • Work with cultural and religious institutions to organize health sensitization programs for adolescents and youth.
  • Work with student leadership in schools and guild councils for universities and schools of higher learning to train leaders.
  • Document key lessons learnt, best and promising practices for dissemination at district, regional and international health meetings and conferences.
  • Generate abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer review journals for the school health program.
  • Generate abstracts from the experiences derived from the school health program.
  • Generate weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports and disseminate to the key stakeholders.
  • Organize quarterly feedback and performance review meetings to provide feedback to the key stakeholders and heads of institutions.
  • Any other duties assigned.

 

Key Outputs:

  • Primary, Secondary and Tertiary schools/institutions mapped and MoUs signed
  • School health program key stakeholders mobilized
  • IEC materials generated and disseminated
  • Sensitization programs and medical camps conducted
  • Key lessons learnt, best and promising practices disseminated
  • Abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer review journals for the school health program generated
  • Weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports disseminated to key stakeholders
  • Quarterly feedback and performance review meetings organized




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum Academic Qualifications: A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Education, Social Sciences, SWASA, Mass Communication, Public Relations, Nursing, or a related field, and fully registered / licensed with the relevant professional councils.
  • Required Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience in designing and implementing school health programs.

Key Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of the Ugandan education system and health policies.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English and a local language for the areas of operation is an advantage
