About the Company:
The AIDS Information Centre -Uganda is a catalytic not-for profit Non-Governmental Organization established on 14th February,1990 to provide Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services to the population of Uganda. AIC was the pioneer HIV Counselling and Testing Centre in Africa. Over the last 33 years, AIC has since evolved into a thought-leader in HIV programming, Health Systems Strengthening and Knowledge Management. AIC currently has 10 Centers of Excellence spread across the country, which include: Arua (West Nile region), Lira (Mid North region), Soroti (North-Eastern region), Mbale (Mid-Eastern region), Jinja (Eastern region), Kampala (Central region), Mbarara (Western region), Kabale, Kanungu and Rukungiri (South-Western region).
About Program:
AIC Intends to implement an integrated high quality school program, to provide early detection, Care and Treatment for both communicable and non-communicable diseases for the children, adolescents and youths wellbeing. This will entail a comprehensive and contextualized package of health services that will include: TB Screening, Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing, Nutritional Assessment, Counselling and Support, Sexually Transmitted Infections, screening, diagnosis and early management, deworming, dental checkups, eye sight assessment, screening for skin diseases, HPV Vaccination for girls (10 years and above) to prevent cervical cancer, breast cancer screening, BMI measurements and NCD screening (Hypertension and Diabetes), mental health assessment, novel vaccination for Ebola, COVID-19, Viral Hepatitis and Monkey Pox, VMMC, kidney function testing and liver function testing. The program also aims to tackle cross cutting issues including health education on climate change and mitigation needs, Infection Prevention Control (IPC) and proper waste management practices at the learning institutions and surrounding communities.
Job Summary: The Locum Laboratory Technician shall be responsible for performing laboratory tasks to support the health services provided to students, staff, and faculty in a school setting. He/she will be involved in collecting and preparing samples, conducting diagnostic tests, maintaining lab equipment, managing supplies, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards. The School Health Laboratory Technician will work closely with school health professionals to provide timely and accurate results that assist in promoting the well-being of the school community.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect, label, and prepare biological samples, including blood, urine, and throat swabs, in accordance with medical guidelines and lab safety protocols.
- Ensure all specimens are handled with care, accurately documented, and stored properly.
- Conduct routine diagnostic tests, such as glucose monitoring, urinalysis, and rapid strep tests, under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers.
- Follow established procedures and ensure accurate test results.
- Regularly inspect, clean, and calibrate laboratory equipment.
- Report and arrange for repairs of malfunctioning equipment, as needed.
- Monitor and manage inventory of lab supplies and reagents, ensuring timely ordering and restocking.
- Safely dispose of laboratory waste according to established protocols.
- Ensure all lab activities comply with health and safety regulations, including proper use of PPE and sanitation practices.
- Maintain knowledge of school health policies and emergency procedures related to laboratory operations.
- Work closely with school nurses, counselors, and other healthcare staff to provide supportive and timely lab services.
- Communicate test results, concerns, and laboratory updates effectively to the school health team.
- Establish a robust follow-up and support system for students who receive positive test results, aiming to ensure that at least 90% of affected students access necessary care and resources.
- Any other duties assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum Academic Qualifications: Diploma in Medical Laboratory and fully registered/ licensed with the relevant professional councils. Bachelor’s degree will be an added advantage.
- Additional Training: Certification as a Laboratory Technician (preferred).
- Required Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a school or clinical laboratory setting.
