AFENET is a non-profit networking and service alliance of Field Epidemiology (and Laboratory) Training Programs (FELTPs), and other applied epidemiology training programs. Established in 20025, AFENET has operations in over 40 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and five countries in the Caribbeans. AFENET is dedicated to helping Ministries of Health in Africa build strong, effective, sustainable programs and capacity to improve public health systems on the African continent. The network’s goal is to strengthen Field epidemiology and public health laboratory capacity to contribute effectively to addressing epidemics and other major public health problems in countries where we operate.

 

Job Summary:   AFENET is looking to hire capable and qualified person into the position of a Business Development Officer at the AFENET Secretariat.

 

This position supports the development and execution of fundraising and grants management initiatives to help achieve AFENET’s overall mission and goals. This position also supports grants development and management, ensuring compliance with regulations, documenting policies, procedures, record keeping, and reporting regarding all grant activity within the organization. This includes support for the planning, preparation, and submission of grant proposals to various donors. The Business Development Officer is also responsible for supporting donor and partner cultivation.




Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinates the identification, monitoring, tracking, and forecasting of funding opportunities

Conducts research related to potential donors, funding opportunities, partners, and technical areas

Supports proposal development efforts, which could include reviewing solicitations, preparing documentation required for partnerships, editing and formatting documents, drafting capacity statements, submitting proposals, conducting post-submission assessments and other tasks

Performs grant development and administration work involving preparing, maintaining, and reporting of grants; evaluating grant applications to determine appropriateness of grant or compliance with requirements and standards; monitoring grant awards; support contract review and negotiation, and serving as a liaison between funding sources and AFENET

Contributes to organizational knowledge management efforts through use of shared drives and the grants management systems to archive, organize and share proposal- and grant-related information

Maintains a grants information database and develops grants management planning tools to enhance efficiencies.

Manages grants processes to ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures, and industry best practices.

Serves as point of contact for items, issues, and questions relating to grant proposals and projects. Troubleshoots and assists in resolving grant issues/challenges.

Spearhead monitoring of subgrants and sub-contracts, ensuring that sub-grantees/subcontractors adhere to contractual obligations and funder requirements.

Keeps abreast of current best practices and trends of grants management and identifies areas for improvement and enhancements in grants management systems and processes.

Participate in representing AFENET at external meetings with partners, funders, and other stakeholders

Support training of AFENET staff in areas related to grants development and management as may be required

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Master’s degree in Public health, Public administration or Business Administration with a bachelor’s degree in any biological science.

Desirable Knowledge requirements and qualities

More than 5 years’ experience in managing grants from diverse funders with expert knowledge of grants management processes and techniques in the health sector

Competency in the use of personal computer and software, such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and others.

Excellent writing, research, communication and presentation skills

Ability to simultaneously manage various critical, complex, time-sensitive grant assignments

Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and deliver on time

Attention to detail

Knowledgeable in the laws, regulations, rules, policies, procedures, and methods governing the administration of grants, cooperative agreements, and awards. Expert knowledge of and familiarity with grants management, including proposal review procedures, and grant monitoring.

Knowledge of program management principles

Knowledge of grants business and industry practices, including experience with grants management software/programming.
