Job Title: Entomology Laboratory Technician

Organisation: Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration

Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda

About Organisation:

The Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) is a non-profit research organization. IDRC conducts research in infectious diseases including Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis. Our studies have led to over 300 publications and have impacted on the management of infectious diseases in Uganda. IDRC currently manages over 41 Grants with an annual budget of $11 million. IDRC was established in May 2008 by Ugandan health scientists from Makerere University College of Health Sciences, University of California, San Francisco and the Uganda Ministry of Health.




Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support entomological monitoring and laboratory sample processing.
  • Conduct morphological identification of Anopheles mosquitoes.
  • Perform PCR assays for sibling species identification of An. gambiae s.I. and An. funestus
  • Detect insecticide resistance markers including Kdr and Ace-1R mutations.
  • Conduct ELISA for sporozoite detection and blood meal analysis.
  • Prepare reagents and maintain proper sample storage and cold chain systems.
  • Implement quality assurance and adhere to SOPs.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory records.
  • Ensure timely data recording, entry and reporting.
  • Support training and capacity building activities.
  • Participate in vector control operational research activities.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by thee supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • BACHELORS : Medical Laboratory Sciences , Medical Laboratory Technology or Biomedical Sciences – Mandatory
  • DIPLOMA : Diploma in Medical Entomology and Parasitology – Added Advantage

Certifications:

N/A

Skill & Experience:

  • Knowledge of PCR, ELISA, and malaria vector identification techniques – Mandatory
  • Knowledge of insecticide resistance monitoring – Mandatory
  • Certificate in Good Laboratory Practice and biosafety skills – Mandatory
  • Strong analytical, communication, and report writing skills – Mandatory
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. – Mandatory
