Yalelo (U) Limited is a tilapia fish farm that was established in Uganda in 2019. The farm is located in Butembe, Buikwe district on the shores of Lake Victoria. Yalelo Uganda is a subsidiary of First Wave Group B.V; a Dutch company with a portfolio of aquaculture related assets in Africa. First Wave Group owns and operates Yalelo Zambia, a pioneer of Aquaculture founded in 2011 that has grown quickly to become the leading fish farm in Zambia and among the largest aquaculture farms in Africa.
Job Summary: To successfully transfer fingerlings from hatchery to nursery cages on the lake while minimizing stress on the fish to improve survival rates.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure Hapas are inspected properly before Installation for proper storage of fish.
- Ensure Transport tanks are washed and disinfected before transferring fish.
- All transport tanks and transport materials should be kept clean all the time and all connections should be ready and tested/confirmed for proper functionality
- Checking water parameters of the pond origin and the lake
- Ensure that Cages and nets are checked properly before offloading fish for stocking
- Ensure transport truck is in the right position (facing the lake) to directly move/setoff immediately after loading the fish to avoid extra movements.
- Ensure Transfer Tanks are put on the Truck, with oxygen, regulators, flowmeter with a diffuser attached with no leakages.
- Grading and sampling Fish in different sizes using a grader of specific sizes according to the ABW
- Ensure that Transfer tanks are filled with water from the pond of origin where fish are coming from
- Transfer pipe and gate funnel should be brought to the lake harbour before transferring fish
- Organise and ensure the Scale, transfer data book and other materials for transfer are ready and pond of origin.
- Ensure 10kgs of salt per tank is added, check salt concentration in the tanks and add more salt if needed. The reading must be 10ppt in the tank.
- Ensure that Dissolved Oxygen level in the Hapa/Pond is above 3mg/L before handling fish
- Drag the Hapa during fish grading to ensure fish is concentrated/crowded in one corner of the Hapa before scoping
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by complying with health, safety and environmental procedures and legislation as well as maintaining housekeeping standards.
- Any other duties assigned by the Supervisor / Manager.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Uganda Certificate of Education.
- At least 2 years work experience in the Hatchery
- Knowledge in Swimming and Rescue skills.
- Good communication skills including writing and reading skills
Good in Basic Mathematics
- Physical strength and stamina
- Ability to get along well with co-workers
- Ability to keep up to date with changing technology
- Ability to do precision work
Strong Analytical Skills
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to swim
