The Agent Banking Company (ABC) was established in 2017 by Uganda Banker’s Association (UBA) the umbrella organization for commercial banks in Uganda and Eclectics a pan-African technology company. Similar to the Mobile Money model, Agent Banking empowers commercial banks to appoint agents to provide banking services such as deposits, withdrawals and more on their behalf. Agents can be the local shopkeeper, kiosk owners, supermarket attendant or anyone in your community who has been authorized by your bank.
Job Summary: To support the Settlement and Reconciliations function in carrying out daily reconciliation, settlement preparation, transaction verification, record management, and operational support activities. The intern will gain practical exposure to payment systems, settlement processes, reconciliation procedures, and financial operations while contributing to efficient execution of operational activities under supervision.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support verification and reconciliation of settlement files obtained from the Shared Agent Banking System (SABS) before settlement processing.
- Assist in identifying discrepancies or inconsistencies in settlement files and escalate findings to the Settlement and Reconciliations Officer for review and resolution.
- Support preparation and timely submission of settlement files to relevant stakeholders as guided by the supervisor.
- Assist in tracking settlement-related communications and maintaining records of interactions with participating institutions.
- Support review and recording of transaction claims (bank reversals) in SABS under supervision.
- Assist in following up on transaction claims and communicating updates to relevant teams where required.
- Support coordination with participating banks regarding reconciliation queries and operational issues.
- Compile, organize, and maintain transaction vouchers, settlement records, and supporting documentation in accordance with record management procedures.
- Support processing of operational requests and third-party business needs relating to settlements and reconciliations.
- Assist in generating reconciliation reports and maintaining accurate operational records.
- Participate in monitoring settlement and reconciliation processes to identify process inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
- Adhere to operational procedures, policies, and internal controls to support efficient service delivery.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve departmental objectives and operational excellence.
- Participate in training programs and continuously build knowledge of settlement, reconciliation, and payment systems operations.
- Undertake any other duties assigned by the supervisor or management.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Final-year student or recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Commerce, Statistics, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Prior internship, industrial training, or exposure to banking, financial services, telecommunications, or operational environments is an added advantage but not mandatory.
- Basic proficiency in MS Excel and willingness to learn data analysis and reconciliation tools.
- Demonstrated interest in financial operations, payments, settlement systems, or reconciliations
