Job Summary: The Head of Risk leads and strengthens the Bank’s risk management function, providing independent oversight as the second line of defence. The role ensures that risks are proactively identified, understood,
and managed within the Bank’s risk appetite, while supporting sustainable growth, regulatory compliance, and operational resilience.
The role provides independent challenge across all risk-taking activities and engages directly with the Board Risk Committee to ensure strong governance, transparency, and accountability.
Working closely with the Board and Executive Management, the role shapes a forward-looking, integrated risk framework that protects the Bank while enabling it to scale responsibly.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Driving Risk Discipline
- Embed risk into day-to-day decision-making: ensuring lending, pricing, and growth decisions are aligned to approved risk appetite.
- Provide independent challenge on key decisions, including large exposures, new products, and policy exceptions.
- Strengthen adherence to risk policies and regulatory expectations, including those of the Bank of Uganda.
- Maintain proactive and transparent engagement with regulators on risk-related matters, including supervisory reviews.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and reliable risk reporting to Management and the Board.
Safeguarding Stability
- Protect the Bank’s capital, earnings, and liquidity through proactive identification and management of risks.
- Monitor asset quality trends, portfolio segments, and concentration risks, ensuring early identification of stress and timely corrective action.
- Strengthen stress testing and scenario analysis to anticipate potential shocks.
- Support disciplined growth by balancing risk and return in line with the Bank’s strategic objectives.
Building Resilience
- Strengthen operational, technology, and data risk frameworks, ensuring system reliability, integrity of reporting, and resilience of core banking operations.
- Lead business continuity planning and ensure readiness for disruptions, including system outages and external shocks.
- Elevate risk awareness across the Bank, embedding accountability and practical risk ownership at all levels.
- Build and develop a high-performing risk function aligned to the Bank’s growth and transformation agenda.
