Job Title:    School Nurse (Part Time Position)

Organisation: Aga Khan Education Services

Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda

 

About Organisation:

The Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, non-denominational educational networks in the developing world. AKES, U operates schools from Pre-School to High School and offers the British National Curriculum (BNC), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary curriculum.

 

Job Summary: The School Nurse is responsible for providing healthcare services to students and staff, promoting health education, and ensuring a safe and healthy school environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in paediatric nursing, excellent communication skills, and a passion for working with children. The School Nurse is NOT expected to be a qualified physician and should NOT expect to distribute prescription medications or treat infections or ailments that normally need physician intervention.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: She / he will perform the following duties:

  • Healthcare Services:
  • Provide immediate and timely care to students and staff for injuries and illnesses.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers and with parental consent.
  • Manage chronic health conditions and develop individualized healthcare plans for students with special needs.
  • Conduct health screenings (e.g. vision, hearing, scoliosis) and maintain accurate health records.
  • Contact parents when any child needs to be sent home due to sickness, injuries or other health related problem
  • Conduct weekly checks of all first-aid boxed at each school to ensure they are stocked adequately with first-aid supplies.
  • Sick bay Management
  • Ensure the sick bay is stocked with appropriate medications and first-aid materials to support student and staff.
  • Ensure that the surroundings of the sickbay both within and outside the building are clean.
  • Health Education and Monitoring of School Community Health issues:
  • Educate students, staff, and parents on health-related topics, including nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Develop and implement health education programs and materials.
  • Work with the Safety and Security Officer to ensure first-aid training is conducted
  • Organize regular health awareness sessions during assemblies or class time. Observe national and global health days (e.g., World AIDS Day, World Mental Health Day).
  • Work with the relevant departments to plan and implement annual health awareness weeks (e.g., dental health, mental wellness, physical fitness, etc).
  • Promote hygiene and disease prevention; educate students on proper handwashing, coughing etiquette, and personal hygiene.
  • Monitor and encourage proper sanitation practices (e.g., clean toilets, safe food handling).
  • Support heads of school to undertake health inspections or collaborate with sanitation staff to ensure a clean environment.
  • Support mental and emotional wellbeing; identify signs of stress, anxiety or bullying and refer cases appropriately.
  • Monitor and respond to emerging health issues in the school community and the broader Kampala environment; track common illnesses and report patterns to Senior Management e.g. outbreaks.
  • Educate the school community and distribute updates on prevention and early detection of such outbreaks.
  • Emergency Response:
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Develop and implement emergency care plans and procedures.
  • Collaboration:
  • Work closely with teachers, counsellors, and administrators to support student health and well-being.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, parents, and community healthcare providers.
  • Record Keeping
  • Maintaining a register of all students and staff reporting for sickness.
  • Maintain accurate nurse’s notes and records, including summaries of services provided
  • Be competent and up to date with current child protection policies and procedures
  • Record and report all cases of diagnosed or suspected communicable disease to the school administration.
  • Compliance and Reporting:
  • Ensure compliance with local and national health regulations and school policies.
  • Prepare and submit health reports as required by the school and health authorities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • A Diploma in Nursing. A Bachelor in Nursing is an added advantage.
  • Must have a practicing License from the Uganda Nurses & Midwives Council.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Strong clinical and assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate individual and community health records.
  • Team player who works productively with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated ability for empathy.
  • Good interpersonal and customer care skills.
  • Physical requirements / Work Environment
  • Ability to lift and move up to 12 kg.
  • Ability to perform CPR and first aid procedures.
  • School setting with exposure to various health conditions.
  • Regular interaction with children and adolescents.
