Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL) is a leading sugar manufacturer in Uganda. KSL boasts of two sugar estates, one in Kakira – Jinja and the other in Kayunga.
Job Summary: Coordinate and manage the implementation of the end to end Safety Health Environment (SHE) system, including all internal and external audits, and support corrective action across all assigned departments, sections and sites, capabilities to achieve excellence at all KSL factories and plantation sites. Update the SHE system with new legal and other applicable requirements in Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL) operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Log Liaise with Head of Department and Head of Section to carry out hazard identifications and risk assessments/ environment impact assessment and follow up implementation of appropriate controls.
- Liaise with Head of Department and Head of Section to carry out incident and accident investigations and follow-up implementation of corrective actions and one-point lessons from incidents.
- Support SHE Manager in developing and managing the budget in assigned department/site.
- Guide and influence business understanding of SHE systems in assigned department or site.
- Manage and coordinate with Head of Department and Head of Section to ensure compliance and management of SHE system at assigned department/site.
- Participate and support implementation approved SHE game plans and preventive activity plans in assigned department or site to achieve excellent sustainable results.
- Coordinate with the Management Systems Coordinator in the sustainable implementation of the ISO 14001:2015 Environment Management & 45001:2018 Occupational Safety & Health Management system across assigned department/site.
- Maintain and ensure compliance with SHE policies, procedures and legal requirements and coordinate with relevant government stakeholders and communities on environment matters.
- Proactively entrench SHE systems in assigned department or site and support SHE manager in leading and managing SHE committees and collaborate with emergency response teams in assigned department/site.
- Build collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships with customers and stakeholders.
- Work closely with KSL medical team to identify and mitigate risks which may lead to occupational related issues to the business.
- Collate relevant SHE communications and information and share with workers in assigned department/site.
- Prepare weekly and monthly SHE reports for assigned department/site to department/site management to facilitate SHE planning and decision-making.
- Comply and ensure KSL Safety Health and Environment policies, procedures and practices are adhered to during execution of work activities.
- Liaise with SHE Manager to ensure SHE costs are optimised to drive profitable growth.
- Support in any assigned SHE roles as required by management and willing to work in any assigned location within KSL or Madhvani Group operations.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Education: BSc Engineering, Environment Engineering/Environmental Science and Technology or BSc related field.
Experience, Skills and Competences:
- At least three years’ experience in a similar position with at least 1 year at supervisory level in factory/plantation sites
- Prior training on NOSA/ISO 14001:2015/ISO 45001:2018 Internal Auditor/Implementor is added advantage.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of local safety health and environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
