Job Title:  Environment Assistant – 2 Positions

About Organisation:

Community Empowerment for Rural Development (CEFORD) is a leading, not for profit Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in West Nile, registered with the National NGO Board and operating in West Nile (Uganda)

About Project:

CEFORD in partnership with World Vision Uganda is implementing Integrated Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (IMCHN) Project in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement through Targeted Supplementary Feeding, routine screening, MIYCAN counselling, and Social Behavior Change Communication, alongside nutrition-sensitive actions in the Districts of Terego and Madi Okollo with Funding from WFP. The overall objective of the project is to improve the nutritional status and well-being of vulnerable refugee and host populations in Rhino Camp through integrated and targeted nutrition interventions.

Job Summary: The Environment Assistant will support the implementation of environmental and climate resilience activities under the Outcome 2 of URRI Project. He or she will assist the Environment Officer in promoting sustainable natural resource management, ecosystem restoration, and community-based environmental initiatives in refugee-hosting and surrounding host communities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support planning and execution of field-based environmental activities such as tree planting, land restoration, and natural resource management.
  • Mobilize and engage refugee and host community groups to actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives.
  • Conduct sensitization and awareness sessions on sustainable environmental practices and climate change adaptation.
  • Facilitate training for community-based facilitators and farmer field schools on nursery establishment, tree management, and soil and Water conservation.
  • Support construction and dissemination of energy-saving technologies such as Lorena stoves and fuel-efficient devices.
  • Participate in monitoring project sites to assess tree survival rates, tree protection, land restored, and adoption of improved practices.
  • Collect environmental data, maintain records, and prepare weekly and monthly activity reports for the Environment Officer.
  • Ensure project activities comply with URRI’s environmental standards and contribute to climate resilience objectives.
  • Collaborate with district environment and forestry officers, local leaders, and partner agencies to harmonize environmental efforts.
  • Account for distributed seedlings, tools, and materials used during environmental interventions.
  • Support GIS/GPS mapping of restoration sites and tree planting areas for monitoring and reporting.
  • Promote equitable participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in environmental activities.
  • Assist in organizing logistics, procurement requests, and field requisitions related to environmental activities.
  • Identify environmental risks, challenges, and propose mitigation measures in collaboration with the Environment Officer.
  • Uphold URRI’s policies on environment, gender equality, and child protection throughout all interventions.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Diploma in Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental conservation or natural resource management in community or humanitarian settings.
  • Practical experience in tree nursery management, ecosystem restoration, or community training.
  • Knowledge of GIS/GPS tools, data collection, and basic report writing.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
