Established 30 years ago as Biyinzika, BPIL has grown from small beginnings to a company with over 9?5 employees stationed in over 9 production sites. BPIL produces and distributes quality day-old chicks and HACCP certified animal feed through over 40 branches within Uganda and the East African region. BPIL also produces chicken meat products under the Pearl Chicken brand retailed directly through our 30 Pearl chicken shops. Pearl also supplies leading wholesale, retail and food service customers with quality Ugandan National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) certified products.
Job Summary: The purpose of the role is to lead the management accounting and performance reporting function of BPIL, ensuring timely, accurate, and insightful financial analysis that drives operational efficiency, cost control, and strategic decision-making. The Senior Management Accountant plays a key role in consolidating divisional performance, improving financial systems, and supporting the CFO in managing group profitability and reporting integrity.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Management and Cost Reporting & Performance Management
- Lead preparation and consolidation of monthly management accounts across all business units Feed, Breeders, Hatchery, Processing, and Commercial.
- Analyze profitability by product line, business unit, and customer segment, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare and present monthly, weekly performance dashboards and commentary for EXCO and Board review.
- Drive continuous improvement in management reporting, including automation via Power BI and Business Central.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Coordinate the annual budgeting process, ensuring alignment with business strategy and operational capacity.
- Develop rolling forecasts and scenario analyses to support strategic planning.
- Validate departmental budget submissions and challenge assumptions where necessary.
- Prepare variance reports (actual vs. budget / forecast) with analysis on financial impact and corrective recommendations.
- Support long-term financial planning and capital investment modelling
Costing & Margin Analysis
- Oversee maintenance of standard cost models for all key products (feed, DOCs, live birds, frozen chicken, by-products).
- Review and report on material, labour, and overhead variances; investigate root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Partner with Operations, Procurement, and Production teams to validate conversion costs and drive efficiency improvements.
- Support product pricing, cost recovery, and contribution margin analysis for strategic decision-making.
Financial Controls & Governance
- Ensure compliance with the Finance Manual, IFRS, and internal control framework.
- Review journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations prepared by junior accountants.
- Lead periodic balance sheet reviews, focusing on inventory valuation, intercompany balances, and provisions.
- Support internal and external audit processes with required schedules and reconciliations.
- Mentor team members in control discipline and data integrity.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Act as finance lead for automation projects (ERP upgrades, Business Central enhancements, Power BI dashboards).
- Standardise financial templates and automate repetitive reporting processes.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for management accounting processes.
- Support system integration between SFA and Business Central for real-time reporting
Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise and coach junior management accountants and analysts.
- Build strong working relationships with Operations, Commercial, and Procurement teams to align financial and operational performance.
- Lead cross-functional financial reviews, promoting accountability for results and cost control.
- Represent the Finance Department in EXCO-prep meetings when delegated by the CFO.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce.
- Professional qualification: CPA, ACCA, or equivalent (fully qualified preferred).
Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 6–8 years’ progressive experience in management accounting, preferably within manufacturing, agribusiness, or FMCG sectors.
- Proven experience in cost accounting, performance management, and ERP systems (Microsoft Business Central / Dynamics NAV preferred).
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, Power BI, and data analytics tools.
- Strong understanding of IFRS, costing principles, and financial planning.
- Strategic and analytical thinker with attention to detail.
