About Organisation:

Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, established by the Uganda Cancer Institute Act, 2016. The Act mandates the Institute to manage and coordinate cancer care and cancer-related conditions across the country. UCI’s core functions include cancer treatment, prevention, research, and training in fields such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Radiotherapy, Surgery, Imaging and Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and other related specialties.

Job Summary: Preparing and dispensing radiopharmaceuticals, ensuring quality control, managing radioactive waste, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to oversee nuclear medicine procedures. They also provide expert advice on radiopharmaceutical use, manage inventory, maintain regulatory compliance, and may participate in research and development and staff training.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible to the Senior Consultant for performing the following duties: –

  • Prepare and dispense radiopharmaceuticals: Follow strict safety and regulatory guidelines for the preparation and distribution of radioactive drugs.
  • Ensure quality control: Perform quality control tests to ensure the efficacy, safety, and quality of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Manage radiopharmaceutical inventory: Maintain accurate stock levels, order supplies, and manage the storage of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Oversee radioactive waste disposal: Ensure the proper and compliant disposal of all radioactive waste materials.
  • Collaborate on procedures: Work with nuclear medicine technologists and physicians to plan and execute diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Monitor patients: Monitor patients for any adverse reactions to the radiopharmaceuticals and report findings to the medical team.
  • Provide expert consultation: Offer expert advice on the use, handling, and safety of radiopharmaceuticals to other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance: Keep accurate records of all radiopharmaceutical transactions and perform regular audits to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Participate in research and development: Contribute to research efforts to improve services and develop new radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Train staff: Educate and train other healthcare staff on the safe handling and use of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Take on management duties: Participate in departmental management, which may include service development, audit, and meetings related to the diagnostic imaging service.
  • Attract and support strategic collaborations between UCI and national/international partners in line with the UCI strategy
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • A Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy of its equivalent from a recognized University or Institution.
  • Master’s degree in Radio pharmacy from a recognized University or Institution.
  • Sub – Specialization / Fellowship in Radio Pharmacy
  • Registered as a Radio pharmacists with PSU, with current practicing license.
  • Must have attained experience in working in a public facility with similar work loads.
  • Key competencies required for the post: The incumbent should have competences in: Planning, organizing and coordinating; Financial Management- Human Resource Management; Change Management; Coaching and mentoring; Effective communication; Knowledge management; Ethics and Integrity; Leadership; Team work and Time management; Report writing skills; Research; ICT; Basic life support skills; strong knowledge of radiation safety and radiopharmaceuticals, and exceptional attention to detail; problem-solving skills; Experience providing medical services; Counselling skills; Customer focused with ability to decipher customer expectations.
