About Organisation:
Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, established by the Uganda Cancer Institute Act, 2016. The Act mandates the Institute to manage and coordinate cancer care and cancer-related conditions across the country. UCI’s core functions include cancer treatment, prevention, research, and training in fields such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Radiotherapy, Surgery, Imaging and Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and other related specialties.
Job Summary: To ensure the provision to patients of comprehensive and highest quality Nuclear Medicine services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible to the Senior Consultant for performing the following duties: –
- Prepare reports summarizing patient diagnostic or care activities.
- Check and approve the quality of diagnostic images before patients are discharged.
- Verify that medical activities or operations meet standards.
- Interpret imaging data and confer with other medical specialists to formulate diagnoses.
- Analyze test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to plan or provide treatment.
- Review procedure requests and patients’ medical histories to determine applicability of procedures and radioisotopes to be used.
- Direct nuclear medicine technologists or technicians regarding desired dosages, techniques, positions, and projections.
- Supervise patient care personnel.
- Monitor quality control of radionuclide preparation, administration, or disposition ensuring that activities comply with applicable regulations and standards.
- Monitor the handling of hazardous materials or medical wastes.
- Advise other physicians of the clinical indications, limitations, assessments, or risks of diagnostic and therapeutic applications of radioactive materials.
- Administer radioisotopes to clinical patients or research subjects.
- Teach nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, or other specialties at graduate educational level.
- Consult with patients following radiation treatments to provide information and assess outcomes or to recommend further consultation or treatments as appropriate.
- Establish and enforce radiation protection standards for patients and staff.
- Any other duties that may be assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- MBChB Degree or its equivalent from a recognized University or Institution.
- A Master of Medicine Degree in Nuclear Medicine, Internal Medicine or its equivalent from a recognized University or Institution.
- Must have completed a 3 years’ residency program in nuclear medicine, Internal Medicine from a recognized institute.
- A Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine is an added advantage.
- Registration as a specialist with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
