About Organisation:
Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, established by the Uganda Cancer Institute Act, 2016. The Act mandates the Institute to manage and coordinate cancer care and cancer-related conditions across the country. UCI’s core functions include cancer treatment, prevention, research, and training in fields such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Radiotherapy, Surgery, Imaging and Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and other related specialties.
Job Summary: To provide technical support and guidance in the management and delivery of quality gastrointestinal surgery services at the Institute and its catchment area
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible to Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology for performing the following duties:
- To run specialized lower and upper gastrointestinal surgery Clinics.
- To manage and supervise Ward Rounds.
- To supervise and train Medical Officers Special Grade, Medical Officers and other Health professionals under him/her.
- To provide technical and professional advice to Government, the Institute or Institution in gastrointestinal surgery.
- To teach Postgraduate and Undergraduates Medical Students as wells as other Health Students.
- Developing departmental work plans, budgets and reports
- To supervise and train Intern Doctors.
- To coordinate and manage a referral system for patients at the National level.
- To ensure that discipline and the ethical code of conduct are observed by the staff under him/her.
- To plan, coordinate and conduct research in lower and upper gastrointestinal surgery.
- To plan and coordinate continuing Medical Education in lower and upper gastrointestinal surgery for Health Professionals at the Institute and the Regional Centers.
- To provide technical guidance on the specifications for procurement of equipment, drugs and other logistics required for lower and upper gastrointestinal surgery.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- MB.CH.B from a recognized University.
- Master of Medicine in Surgery from a recognized University/Institution.
- Fellowship in Gastroenterology surgery
- Registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
- A valid practicing license
- At least nine (9) years working experience, three (3) of which should have been served at Medical Officer Special Grade level in government or an equivalent level from a reputable organization
- Key competencies required for the post: The incumbent should have competences in: Planning, organizing and coordinating; Financial Management; Human Resource Management; Change Management; Coaching and mentoring; Effective communication; Knowledge management; Ethics and Integrity; Leadership; Team work and Time management; Report writing skills; Research; ICT; Basic life support skills; Experience providing medical services; Counselling skills; Customer focused with ability to decipher customer expectations.
