Job Title: Yard and Field Operations Officer

About Organisation:

UgaLumber Company Ltd, a strategic initiative of UTG Wood Mill Ltd—a collective of 20 progressive commercial tree growers managing over 5,000 hectares of mature Eucalyptus and Pine plantations—aims to unlock the full value of Uganda’s forestry sector by producing high-quality timber for the construction and furniture industries. Through this venture, UgaLumber will improve market access for tree growers, generate sustainable returns, and position Uganda as a regional leader in responsible and sustainable timber production.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Log Yard Management

  • Supervise daily yard operations including log offloading, sorting, stacking, and yard housekeeping.
  • Monitor log inventory levels and maintain up-to-date yard records.
  • Implement safe yard traffic control, signage, and operational procedures.
  • Ensure logs are measured (scaled) accurately and recorded upon entry.

Field Procurement & Coordination

  • Support field teams in identifying and scheduling sawlog deliveries from contracted growers.
  • Coordinate with transport providers to optimize delivery timelines and reduce downtime.
  • Inspect logs at point-of-origin (in field) to confirm compliance with specifications and quality standards.

Inventory Tracking & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate logs of deliveries, volumes, suppliers, and yard movements.
  • Utilize inventory systems or manual ledgers to track incoming and outgoing log volumes.
  • Generate daily/weekly reports on log stock levels and supplier performance.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Enforce occupational safety standards in the log yard and during field operations.
  • Promote a safety-first culture among yard staff, drivers, and visitors.
  • Identify operational risks and escalate safety concerns promptly.

Team Coordination

  • Supervise and mentor casual yard workers, tally clerks, and equipment operators.
  • Support onboarding and orientation for new log yard and field staff.
  • Ensure the team follows company SOPs and daily productivity targets.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Logistics, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • At least 3–5 years of experience in forestry field operations, sawmill logistics, or timber yard management.
  • Familiarity with timber grading, log scaling methods, and chain-of-custody principles.
  • Working knowledge of yard safety protocols and basic inventory practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding environments.
  • Knowledge of Eucalyptus and Pine log characteristics is a strong advantage.
