Job Summary: OLK is seeking to recruit Graduate Biomedical Engineers (Biomedical Engineering Graduate Trainee – Technical Assistant) to support the implementation of a Biomedical Engineering Program (BME) in Tororo District. The selected candidates will be responsible for equipment servicing, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and user training over a three-month engagement period with a possibility of extension.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyses, troubleshoots, and repairs oxygen therapy devices and other medical devices utilizing established electronic test and measurement equipment and techniques.
  • Ensure timely completion of preventive maintenance schedules, following manufacturer’s instructions for inspection, testing and servicing.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on medical devices in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, applicable codes, standards, and department policy.
  • Train clinicians, and medical equipment users on the proper use of biomedical equipment through equipment operation demonstrations.
  • Provides operational and technical advice to clinical staff on medical devices and oxygen therapy devices in area of expertise.
  • Interacts with clinical staff on a regular basis to ensure needs are being met and may be expected to be present during the clinical use of equipment.
  • Documents and maintains accurate records of all inspections, repairs, adjustments, etc. performed on all equipment.
  • Requests and/or orders necessary repair and spare parts according to established procedures and contract relationships.
  • May participate in design and construction projects.
  • Communicate with users (doctors, nurses, surgeons etc.), health facility and OLK management regarding status of equipment and repairs.
  • Coordinate onsite visits for the project implementation. Receive calls for repair and address issues in time.
  • Complete job reports and tools like equipment utilization to track performance and use of critical equipment at different facilities.
  • Ensure all equipment have service stickers with details of service personnel and SOPs in the locations of use. Ensure that servicing and PMs are done on time.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • A bachelor’s degree in biomedical Engineering or equivalent from a recognisable institute or university. (2 years and less from the date of graduation)
  • 3 months to 1 year experience working in a hospital setting. (Familiar with Hospital medical equipment, service schedules, service procedures and Troubleshooting).

Skills And Requirements Needed.

  • Ability to use computer-based tools at a moderate to high level e.g. should be able to use a database and online tools for record keeping.
  • Ability to use the Office suit tools for reporting, formatting and documenting. (Word, Excel, PPT).
  • Can utilize a computer to document reports
  • Understands electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles
  • Ability to utilize basic electrical and mechanical tools for testing and repair;
  • Can communicate effectively: prefer someone who can speak and write in English.
  • Organized; can properly plan and implement activities.
  • Ability to train staff in proper utilization of biomedical equipment;
  • Must be willing to learn how to operate, test and repair a variety of medical equipment
