Job Title: Strategic Media and Multi-Stakeholder Content Production Consultant

Established in 1997 through a merger between the United Nations Drug Control Programme and the Centre for International Crime Prevention, UNODC operates in all regions of the world through an extensive network of field offices.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the overall supervision of the UNODC Head of Office in Uganda, the consultant will be responsible for the following set of activities as required:

  • Develop a clear and actionable media relations strategy tailored to UNODC interventions in Uganda.
  • Identify and create a database of key media contacts (journalists, editors, producers, and media houses across print, radio, TV, and digital platforms) for engagement on UNODC interventions.
  • Design and produce strategic UNODC documents such as newsletters, annual reports, achievement reports, and media advisories.
  • Organize and facilitate media events, including press conferences, interviews, and media briefings.
  • Support the coordination of media coverage for UNODC-led events and initiatives.
  • Organize and conduct training for UNODC implementing partners on media engagement and advocacy.
  • Organize and conduct training for journalists focused on responsible and effective reporting on crime prevention and justice-related issues.
  • Develop and produce short video content for dissemination across UNODC’s social media platforms.
  • Organize, host, and moderate X Spaces and podcasts to highlight and engage audiences around key UNODC events.

Expected tangible and measurable output(s)/deliverable(s): The consultant will be expected to deliver the following set of outputs:

  • A clear and actionable media relations strategy tailored to UNODC interventions in Uganda.
  • An up-to-date database of at least 50 media contacts for regular engagement developed.
  • Short videos developed and disseminated via UNODC Uganda’s social media platforms.
  • X Spaces and Podcasts hosted and moderated.
  • Successful organization and facilitation of media events each documented with media coverage reports.
  • Training workshop for UNODC implementing partners on media engagement and advocacy, with at least 20 participants conducted.
  • Capacity-building workshop for journalists on responsible and effective reporting of crime prevention and justice-related issues, with at least 20 journalists conducted.
  • Four high-quality publications produced.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in mass communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or related discipline is required.
  • A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in media relations, strategic communications, public relations, or journalism is required
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing media engagement strategies for international organizations, NGOs, or development partners is desirable.
  • Previous work experience with UN agencies or similar international organizations is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of the Ugandan media landscape, with an established network of media contacts across print, radio, television, and digital platforms is desirable.
  • Development of creative and engaging training materials for an adult audience, in a variety of formats and user guides desirable

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariate.
  • For this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
