Job Summary: Earths Work LLC is seeking an experienced Head of Carbon Development to lead the strategic development and execution of large-scale nature-based carbon initiatives across Uganda. This senior leadership role will oversee all aspects of carbon project development, from feasibility to validation, ensuring alignment with international standards and requirements. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with strong management skills to drive high-integrity projects that deliver climate, community, and biodiversity outcomes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Define and implement the carbon project development strategy for Uganda, ensuring alignment with national climate goals.
- Secure funding and partnerships (corporate buyers, investors, NGOs) to scale project pipelines.
- Oversee end-to-end project cycles: feasibility studies, methodology selection, PDD preparation, validation, and MRV implementation.
- Ensure projects meet technical, financial, and legal requirements for carbon certification.
- Mitigate risks (leakage, reversals, policy changes) through robust planning.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams (carbon scientists, GIS specialists, legal advisors, community engagement officers).
- Represent the company with government agencies, investors, and local communities.
- Foster partnerships with research institutions and carbon market players.
- Monitor evolving carbon standards (e.g., Paris Agreement Article 6, Uganda’s NDCs).
- Integrate innovative approaches (remote sensing, AI for MRV) to enhance project quality.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- 10+ years in nature-based carbon project development, with 5+ years in leadership roles.
- Proven track record of successfully validated VCS/Gold Standard projects (REDD+ or AFOLU preferred).
- Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa (Uganda-specific experience highly desirable).
- Deep knowledge of carbon methodologies, MRV frameworks, and IPCC guidelines.
- Strong financial acumen (carbon credit pricing, off-take agreements, ROI analysis).
- Familiarity with East Africa land tenure systems and environmental policies.
Education & Certifications
- Master’s or PhD in Environmental Science, Forestry, Business Administration, or related fields.
- Certifications in carbon accounting or project management (e.g., PMP) are a plus.
- Examples of past carbon project documents (e.g., PDDs, validation reports) if available.
