About US:

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Global Land Tool Network programme supports the national land policy implementation and implementation of appropriate land tools and approaches in both urban and rural context for land tenure security.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Land, Housing and Shelter Section and direct supervision by the designated staff of LHSS, the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks;

  • Provide technical and coordination support to the implementing partners in the use and application of GLTN land tools and approaches towards tenure security improvement in Uganda.
  • Prepare technical documentation of the implementation of land tools and approaches in relation to the customary land registration processes.
  • Provide technical and coordination support in the implementation of various LHSS related programmes and interventions in Uganda including on planning, coordination, review of work programmes of implementing partners and monitoring.
  • Prepare progress and terminal reports of the implementation of the ‘Land at Scale in Uganda’ project including on key achievements and lessons learned.
  • Provide technical support in the development of new project proposals and/or concept notes related to scaling up or replication of on-going interventions in Uganda.
  • Co-organize capacity development interventions and learning exchanges related to the customary land registration processes and other LHSS land programme activities in Uganda.

Nationality

  • Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Languages

  • English, Level: Fluent, Required

Required education level

  • Bachelor’s degree in Land Tenure, Valuation and Land Management and Geographic Information Systems. Other desirable fields: surveying, land administration, or related fields.

Competencies and values

  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.
  • Sound security awareness.
  • Have affinity with or interest in UNDP’s mandate and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Skills and experience

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in addressing land management and tenure issues in Uganda is required.
  • Knowledge in the Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) and other GLTN tools is an added advantage.
  • Experience on project coordination, event organization and knowledge management on land related issues is highly preferred.
  • Previous working experience with international organizations is highly preferred.
  • Team working ability and flexibility.
