Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Graduate Trainee Statistician will join the Statistics Unit in the Research Department, supporting database design, data management, analysis, mathematical modelling, and interpretation of clinical or research data. The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary experts and national/subnational partners to produce actionable health evidence for informed decision-making.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and apply mathematical and statistical methods to analyse clinical and health research data.
- Contribute to study protocols, indicator development, analysis plans, and data collection tool design.
- Perform robust, reproducible analyses using R, Python, or other analytical software.
- Create clear visualizations and interpret results for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Support REDCap database management, trainings, QA/QC activities, and timely data queries for monthly site reports.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
- Ensure data quality, ethical standards, and confidentiality in all work.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Recent graduate (within 1 Year) or Awaiting graduation with Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Statistics
- GPA of 4.0 and above from a chartered university.

- Recent graduate with GPA of 4.0 and above from a chartered university.
- Strong understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to translate statistical findings into practical policy recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
