Job Summary: To lead and manage the credit risk and collections strategy for MTN Uganda’s device financing portfolio, ensuring sustainable growth, minimal default rates, and enhanced digital inclusion through responsible lending practices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Credit Strategy & Risk Management
- Develop and implement credit policies and risk assessment models for device financing programs.
- Monitor portfolio performance and proactively manage credit risk exposure.
- Collaborate with Business Analysis team to ensure data accuracy and to refine credit scoring models and eligibility criteria.
Portfolio Management
- Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of device financing accounts—from onboarding to repayment and recovery.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as default rates, recovery rates, and customer repayment behavior.
Collections & Recovery
- Design and execute effective collections strategies, including early-stage reminders and late-stage recovery actions.
- Work with third-party partners (e.g., M-KOPA) to ensure alignment on collections and customer experience.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with internal teams (Sales, Marketing, Customer Experience, Legal, IT) and external partners (device vendors, fintechs) to ensure seamless execution of financing programs.
- Ensure all issues are escalated on a timely basis and queries resolved effectively.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement to enhance service delivery
Compliance & Governance
- Design and document processes and make appropriate recommendations to improve operational effectiveness of device credit management
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and MTN Group credit risk policies.
- Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails for all credit-related activities.
Reporting
- Analyse results and highlight variances from the norm, suggesting corrective action as needed
- Report on weekly and monthly basis to Senior Management on the performance, health and risk trends of the loan portfolio as well as other adhoc reports that may be required
- Ensure adequate provisions for bad debt are made inline with IFRS 9 and MTN Uganda Policies .
Supervisory / Leadership / Managerial Complexity
- Work with the Senior Manager in defining compliance related KPAs
- Continually assess the technical competence of the wider team and take steps to develop their knowledge and skill
- Identify, accumulate and analyse statistics that reflect on the team’s performance
- Recognise the strengths of individuals and make use of these to achieve goals

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Professional certification, such as CPA, ACCA, CFA, or Credit Management Certification is highly desirable.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in credit risk management, preferably in telecom, banking, microfinance, or fintech sectors.
- Proven experience in managing consumer credit portfolios, especially in device financing or digital lending.
- Strong understanding of mobile money ecosystems, digital credit scoring, and alternative data use in credit decisions.
- Familiarity with credit risk tools, financial modeling, and portfolio performance tracking.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, Power BI, or Python for credit analytics.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing consumer lending and data privacy in Uganda.
Industry / Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (preferred)
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) (preferred)
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) (preferred)
- Any other specifications
- Leadership training
- Training in Credit risk frameworks and debt recovery processes
- Data analysis and data driven decision making
- Systems training including Oracle Financials, Hyperion (or similar), PowerPoint, Advanced Excel, and Word
- Computer and basic network training
- Key legislation and standards such as the Companies Act, VAT Act, Income Tax Act, IFRS, UCC, USE regulations, Data Protection and Privacy Act etc.
