Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

Job Summary: The GHS’s vaccines and Medical Countermeasures program area supports the development, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics targeting priority pathogens. The Project Pharmacist will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, effective, and quality-assured management and use of medical countermeasures during clinical trials, emergency preparedness, and public health response activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the coordination and implementation of MCM activities, including preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
  • Support the development and rollout of pharmacovigilance and drug safety surveillance systems during MCM deployment.
  • Contribute to the development of guidelines, SOPs, and training materials for the use of novel diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data related to MCM development, deployment and safety monitoring to inform risk-benefit assessments and regulatory decisions.
  • Work with supply chain teams to forecast demand, track inventory, and ensure cold chain integrity for vaccine products.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation of medical countermeasure deployment at facility and community levels including emergency preparedness.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to establish and maintain robust adverse event monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Support the documentation and dissemination of lessons learned and best practices.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (BPharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD); with a minimum GPA of 4.0 obtained from a chartered university. A Master’s degree in Public Health, Clinical Pharmacology, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board and the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda and in good professional standing.

Person Specification

  • Strong technical understanding of pharmaceutical product development, regulatory science, and supply chain logistics.
  • Commitment to public health and emergency response
