Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

Job Summary: The Medical Officer will work closely with the GHS’s Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) technical team leads to develop and implement strategies for Uganda’s and regional AMR mitigation efforts.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate activities for enhancing antimicrobial stewardship across the GHS department’s targeted sites
  • Provide technical assistance in collecting and reviewing clinical data to inform surveillance and patient management across sentinel sites.
  • Contribute to data review and preliminary analysis of AMR trends in human, animal and environmental health.
  • Work with laboratory teams to interpret AMR data and develop hospital antibiograms
  • Support the GHS capacity development agenda including training of health care workers in AMR and other public health emergencies
  • Provide clinical support in treatment units during response to public emergencies
  • Document lessons learnt and best practices from the implementation of efforts to combat AMR and other public health emergencies
  • Review and prepare technical reports, policy briefs for internal and external knowledge sharing.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery (MBChB) obtained from a chartered university with a minimum GPA of 4.0
  • Recent completion of internship training and registered or eligible for registration with the relevant national medical council
  • Training in infectious diseases, IPC, epidemiology, or public health is an added advantage

Person Specification

  • Sound clinical reasoning and interest in evidence-based medicine
  • Basic understanding of microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology
  • Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills
  • Team player with the ability to work with diverse stakeholders
