Reach One Touch One Ministries (ROTOM) is a non-denominational Christian organization reaching out to older persons and children in their care. It was started in Uganda in 2003 and has grown to become one of the most effective mission organizations supporting older persons in Uganda and Ethiopia.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Specimen Handling and Preparation:
- Receiving and accurately labelling and sorting specimens.
- Prioritizing urgent samples and handling unsuitable specimens according to established procedures.
- Preparing samples for analysis by centrifuging, pipetting, or other techniques.
- Ensuring proper storage of specimens.
Laboratory Maintenance and Support:
- Maintaining inventory of supplies and ordering replacements.
- Cleaning and organizing the laboratory workspace, including glassware and surfaces.
- Disposing of waste materials according to safety protocols.
- Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Ensure that equipment is functional and well maintained
Technical Assistance and Testing:
- Assisting with experiments and procedures under the direction of senior staff.
- Performing basic laboratory tests according to established protocols.
- Monitoring and recording test results, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Entering data into laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Following safety protocols and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Adhere to the relevant Codes of Conduct and Ethics.
- Preparing Laboratory reagents, stains for routine investigation
Others
- Manage and account for allocated resources
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Certificate in Medical laboratory or its equivalent
- Full registration with Uganda Allied Health Professionals with an up-to-date license
- At least 1year work experience in a busy clinical setting
- Attention to detail: This is paramount for accuracy in labelling, documenting, and analysing results
- Honesty and ethical conduct are crucial in a laboratory setting.

- A lab assistant needs to keep the lab organized, manage their workload effectively, and prioritize tasks
- Clear and effective communication is essential for interacting with colleagues, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Laboratory work often involves collaboration, so the ability to work well with others is important.
- Identify and resolve issues that arise during experiments or with equipment.
- Laboratory settings can change quickly, so the ability to adapt to new procedures, equipment, or protocols is important.
- Some lab tasks require meticulousness and repetition, so patience and tolerance are invaluable assets.
Personal Attributes:
- Aged between 22 to 45 years.
- Responsibility for the accuracy and reliability of their work and for maintaining a safe environment.
