Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor daily operations across all farm departments to ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) standards and law of Uganda.
  • Identify unsafe practices, hazardous conditions, or non-compliance with internal or legal safety requirements through routine inspections and audits.
  • Conduct regular inspections and functionality checks of machinery, greenhouse equipment, tods, and vehicles to ensure safe use and timely repair or replacement.
  • Coordinate and schedule maintenance or repairs of faulty or damaged equipment to prevent accidents and production downtime.
  • Facilitate induction and ongoing safety training sessions for all employees, contractors, and visitors, with a focus on high-risk areas such as greenhouses, irrigation systems, and spraying teams.
  • Lead investigations into incidents, injuries, or near-misses: identify root causes, document findings, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure the correct placement and visibility of hazard warning signs and safety notices across the farm, especially in technical and high-risk areas.
  • Work with the Quality and Compliance teams to ensure safety measures align with certification requirements (e.g.. MPS. ISO) and product safety standards.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update farm-specific safety policies and emergency response procedures, including fire safety, chemical handling, and PPE use.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and job hazard analyses for all production areas, including cutting, propagation, technical, and logistics.
  • Monitor and manage farm waste disposal practices, ensuring alignment v/ith environmental and safety standards
  • Stay updated with relevant health and safety legislation and ensure all farm operations remain compliant.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely safety reports to farm management, highlighting trends, risks, actions taken, and areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with external auditors, authorities, and law enforcement as needed, especially in cases involving serious incidents or inspections.
  • Promote a culture of health and safety through active engagement.
  • awareness campaigns, and visible leadership in the workplace.
  • Attend professional development workshops, seminars, and certification courses to maintain and enhance safety competencies.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:




  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety. Environmental Science. Industrial Hygiene. Public Health, or a related discipline is required.
  • Additional certifications, such as a Diploma in Hearth & Safety. NEBOSH. I0SH, or other internationally recognized qualifications, are a significant advantage.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience managing hearth and safety operations, preferably in an agricultural, horticultural, or production/manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with MPS-ECAS. ISO standards (e g. ISO 45001). or local compliance audits will be beneficial.

Requirements-Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of Ugandan occupational health and safety legislation, including the Occupational Safety and Hearth Act 2006, and relevant environmental laws (e.g. NEMA regulations. OSHA. and applicable EPA standards).
  • Strong understanding of hazard identification and control methods relevant to an agricultural/production setting, including the safe use of agrochemicals, biological hazards, and equipment-related risks.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and reviewing safety policies. SOPs. and risk assessments tailored to farm operations such as propagation, irrigation, spraying, and harvesting.
  • Proficient in preparing incident reports, safety audits, and statistical safety performance reports, with the ability to identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Capable of conducting and interpreting data analysis related to workplace injuries, near misses, and safety KPIs to support decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Computer literacy is essential: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel. PowerPoint). Experience with digital safety management systems or auditing platforms is an added advantage.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple safety initiatives across various departments and ensure timely reporting.
  • Detail-oriented and diligent, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving safety concerns.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to deliver engaging safety briefings, toolbox talks, and training sessions to both operational and managerial staff.
