Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Computer Scientist Graduate Trainee will support digital health innovations, software development, and data-driven tools to strengthen global health security. The role includes building and maintaining digital systems for disease surveillance, analytics, and emergency response. The trainee will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to design solutions that enable efficient data capture, analysis, and decision-making across GHS programs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development and deployment of digital tools for management and visualisation of GHS departmental projects data
- Support troubleshoot and debugging of the deployed health information systems.
- Maintain documentation for software systems and APIs.
- Work with national and partner stakeholders to integrate data from various sources (e.g., surveillance databases, EMRs, mobile data collection tools).
- Support the finalisation of the department’s data warehouse with data security and system optimization efforts activated
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics (Statistical Computing Specialization).
- Recent graduate with GPA of 4.0 and above from a chartered university.
