Job Title: Senior Accountant Tax and Statutory Obligations

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is a limited liability company incorporated in Uganda under the Companies Act. UEDCL owns the 33KV and below voltage electricity distribution networks and all the operational assets associated with the business.
Job Summary: To ensure compliance with tax laws, regulations and statutory requirements by preparing and reviewing tax returns, statutory filings and related financial reports. The role also involves optimizing tax planning strategies while ensuring accurate and timely reporting to maintain regulatory compliance and minimize risks.
Impact: The job holder is responsible for UEDCL’s adherence to tax and statutory obligations, mitigating compliance risks and avoiding penalties. By implementing efficient tax planning and reporting practices, the position contributes to the organization’s financial sustainability and reputation
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and review tax returns, including VAT, corporate tax, PAYE, and withholding tax, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax laws
- Conduct periodic reconciliations of tax accounts, resolving discrepancies promptly
- Monitor changes in tax regulations and advise on their implications for the company
- Oversee the preparation of statutory financial reports in compliance with regulatory and accounting standards
- Ensure timely submission of statutory filings, including annual returns and compliance certificates
- Liaise with regulatory authorities and auditors to address statutory compliance matters
- Identify opportunities for tax optimization and provide recommendations to management
- Collaborate with the Manager Tax and Statutory Obligations to develop and implement tax-efficient strategies
- Provide technical tax advice and support to internal stakeholders
- Supervise and mentor the Tax Accountant and Accounts Assistant, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in their work
- Conduct performance appraisals, provide feedback, and identify training needs for the team
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors to provide documentation and clarification on tax and statutory matters
- Address audit findings and implement corrective actions to improve compliance practices
- Evaluate and enhance tax reporting processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Leverage technology to streamline statutory and tax reporting systems.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Professional certification or affiliation with ICPAU, ACCA, or equivalent
- In-depth knowledge of tax laws, statutory regulations, and accounting standards (e.g., IPSAS).
Experience
- At least 5 years of experience in tax accounting, statutory reporting, or financial accounting
- Experience in the energy or utility sector is highly desirable
- Proven experience in supervising teams and managing complex compliance processes.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and accounting systems
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in reporting
