Mengo Hospital was founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics, dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides critical training and education to health professionals through its various programs in midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology. Mengo Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to find new solutions to health issues in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct detailed patient history, visual acuity tests, and comprehensive eye examinations to detect refractive errors, eye diseases, and visual impairments.
- Measure refractive errors to prescribe correct lenses for glasses or contact lenses.
- Support other eye specialties in managing conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome.
- Advise patients on suitable corrective lenses and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses.
- Educate patients on eye health, proper eye care practices, and address their questions.
- Promote optical products and services, including frames, lenses, and eye care packages.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum qualification: Recognized Diploma in Optometry from an accredited institution.
- Must be registered with the relevant medical board in Uganda to practice optometry.
- At least 2 years of professional experience in optometry from a recognized institution.
- Knowledge of frame style trends is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and software.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with patients and staff.
- Detail-oriented and able to work under minimal supervision.
