Job Summary: The Legal Officer will provide comprehensive legal support to Umoja Microfinance Uganda, ensuring compliance with Ugandan laws and regulations, safeguarding the institution’s interests, and mitigating legal risks. This role is pivotal in upholding the organization’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs through financial inclusion.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Legal Advisory: Offer expert legal counsel to management and staff on various matters, including loan agreements, contracts, employment matters and regulatory compliance.
- Contract Management: Draft, review, and manage contracts, ensuring they align with legal standards and organizational policies.
- Litigation & Dispute Resolution: Represent the institution in legal proceedings, manage litigation cases, and collaborate with external counsel when necessary. Must ensure that all legal proceedings are closely managed, followed up, kept on track with regular updates shared to Management.
- Debt Recovery: Oversee the legal aspects of debt recovery processes, ensuring adherence to legal procedures and minimizing financial losses.
- Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing microfinance institutions in Uganda.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate legal records, prepare reports for management, and ensure timely renewal of legal documents and licenses.
- Training & Awareness: Conduct legal training sessions for staff to enhance understanding of legal obligations and risk management.
- Any other duties that may be assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Educational Background: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution.
- Professional Certification: Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre.
- Licensing: Enrolled Advocate of the High Court of Uganda with a valid practicing certificate.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a legal role, preferably within a financial institution or microfinance setting.
Skills/Qualifications
- Strong legal research, drafting, and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure.
- High analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and reporting skills
- Networking and influencing skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work flexibly including travelling at short notice
- Computer literacy is a must
