The CEPI-UVRI Centralized Laboratory Network (CLN), established under CEP’S global initiative. supports harmonized vaccine testing and standardized immunogenicity assessments for epidemic preparedness. As a newly established regional CLN node. UVRI is partnering with MRC/ UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit to provide reliable, high-throughput immunoassay support to vaccine developers targeting high-priority threats such as Ebola. Marburg, COVID-19. and Disease X This expansion in East Africa addresses critical gaps in vaccine evaluation, reduces sample shipment delays. and enhances outbreak preparedness across the region.
Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager and coordinator to lead and manage laboratory operations. This is a strategic position for an individual passionate about high-quality laboratory science. health systems strengthening. and epidemic response.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Coordination
- Supervise a multidisciplinary laboratory team and foster a culture of quality, accountability and scientific excellence.
- Track project timelines and ensure the successful execution of laboratory deliverables across studies.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to implementing teams and external stakeholders.
Operations Management
- Coordinate daily laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with SOPs. GCLP, and safety regulations.
- Oversee procurement inventory, and maintenance of reagents and equipment.
- Ensure data integrity, security and traceability across all essays.
- Lead or participate it assay optimization for priority pathogens.
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Uphold internal and external regulatory standards, including IATA, IRB, and national biosafety guidelines.
- Maintain accreditation status and ensure continuous participation in External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes.
- Conduct regular safety training, enforce compliance protocols and maintain audit readiness.
Capacity Building & Documentation
- Develop and review SOPs. training manuals, and orientation materials for new staff and trainees.
- Mentor junior staff and support ongoing professional development
- Lead internal refresher and certification training in GCLP, GOP, IATA, and laboratory biosafety.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree n biomedical laboratory technology or related field (MSc is an added advantage).
- At least 3 years in a supervisory laboratory role with GCLP oversight.
- Credit passes in Physics, Chemistry. Biology. and Mathematics at UCE and UACE.
- Demonstrated experience in ELISA, neutralisation assays. biosafety, and sample shipment, competency in Microsoft Office and basic statistics.
- Strong leadership, attention to detail, excellent communication skills. problem-solving skills. and a results-oriented mindset
