GRAS owns 40,000ha of standing forest in Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda, established through its own planting activities. It also operates East Africa’s largest sawmill in Tanzania, transmission pole treatment and charcoal plants in, Tanzania and Uganda. GRAS is also one of the first global companies to receive carbon revenue from its plantation forests.
Busoga Forestry Company (BFC) manages two plantations (Bukaleba and Kachung) with approximately 6500ha planted to Pine and Eucalyptus. The company also operates a sawmill and Treatment plant and supplies Forest products and biomass to surrounding industries
Job Summary: Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all forest operations including maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders to ensure effective Forest Management for Bukaleba and Kachung Forests
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for Company’s plantations and ensuring all activities are performed in a proficient manner according to the APO, based on company standards.
- Responsible for the implementation of the Company’s EHS obligations and targets in the plantation and to ensure a safe and productive atmosphere.
- Ensure existence of cordial relations with all company stakeholders including but not limited to: communities, Interest groups and individual residents by providing technical support to Community Relations Officer.
- Initiate business development initiatives together with the Sales and Marketing team to enhance the marketability and profitability of forest products.
- Attending to customer service requirements and resolving any related complex issues. And maintaining a positive corporate image by ensuring prompt and accurate feedback on both internal and external inquiries.
- Collaborate with Plantation Managers to generate monthly works orders according to the APO as well as participate in the inspection of completed works and sign off procedures.
- Implement and coordinate the company’s Integrated Fire Management Plan (IFMP).
- Recruit and manage contractors within the forestry department and monitor their performance.
- Plan, co-ordinate, schedule, evaluate and supervise plantation and harvesting staff. Meet with Managers and supervisors to design and implement effective and efficient work plans for direct reports.
- Ensure that Forestry staff maintain accurate production and chemical usage data for capture into micro forest.
- Liaising with forest security teams and companies to address all reported security issues in the Forest
- Compile reports as required and directed by the Country Manager monthly.
- Carry out any other duties as assigned by the management.
