About Organisation:
Safe Way Right Way is a non-governmental organization that was founded in 2013 as a result of a collaboration between the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Partnerships and TotalEnergies to improve road safety on Uganda’s economic road corridors. The organization’s work model is backed by public and private sector partnerships that have enabled the various initiatives geared towards achieving SWRW’s vision of achieving a crash-free road network in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day financial transactions including payments, receipts, and reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records using SWRW’s approved accounting system.
- Ensure that all financial activities comply with internal financial policies and donor requirements.
- Support the preparation of project and organizational budgets in collaboration with program teams.
- Monitor budget utilization and provide regular financial forecasts and variance analyses.
- Alert management of any significant financial risks or deviations from budget.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management, donors, and partners.
- Prepare donor-specific financial statements, ensuring adherence to contract terms and reporting templates.
- Assist in the preparation of audited financial statements and liaise with external auditors during audits.
- Ensure compliance with Ugandan financial regulations, SWRW internal policies, and donor agreements.
- Implement and enforce robust financial controls to safeguard organizational assets.
- Maintain and regularly review the fixed asset register.
- Process monthly payroll, ensuring timely and accurate salary payments.
- Remit statutory deductions (PAYE, NSSF) to relevant authorities.
- Maintain up-to-date payroll records and ensure confidentiality of salary information.
- Review and verify all invoices, quotations, and payment requests for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure that all procurements and payments comply with SWRW’s financial and procurement policies.
- Support the administration and procurement team with financial advice during procurement processes.
- Manage cash flow to ensure availability of funds for project activities.
- Monitor bank balances, prepare bank reconciliations, and address any discrepancies promptly.
- Manage petty cash and ensure regular reconciliations
- Work closely with project managers to ensure correct financial management of projects.
- Provide training or technical support to non-finance staff on financial procedures and compliance.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- Full or part professional accounting qualification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is a MUST
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in accounting roles, preferably in an NGO or donor-funded environment
- Knowledge of donor regulations (USAID, EU, GIZ, UN, etc.) is desirable
Key Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- High attention to detail, strong analytical skills and strong organisational skills
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar)
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and under pressure
