On behalf of our client, we are looking for a competent and experienced Risk Officer to be based in Kampala, Uganda.
Job Summary: This role involves identifying, assessing, and monitoring risks that could impact the organization’s operations, reputation, or financial performance. The role supports the development and implementation of risk management policies, conducts risk assessments, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls. The Risk Officer shall work closely with various departments to promote a risk-aware culture and contributes to the organization’s overall governance and decision-making processes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify potential operational, financial, strategic, and compliance risks across the organization.
- Conduct regular risk assessments to evaluate and prioritize risks based on their potential impact and likelihood.
- Support the development, review, and implementation of risk management policies, procedures, and frameworks.
- Ensure that risk management practices are embedded in operational processes and decision-making.
- Monitor risk indicators and emerging risks, ensuring timely escalation and mitigation.
- Prepare and present risk reports to management and relevant committees, highlighting key risk exposures and trends.
- Ensure organizational compliance with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with regulators and auditors on matters related to risk and compliance.
- Investigate and document risk incidents and loss events, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Contribute to the development and testing of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
- Participate in risk scenario analysis and simulations.
- Collaborate with departments to raise awareness and provide training on risk management practices.
- Serve as a point of contact for risk-related queries and guidance across the organization.
- Analyze data to detect trends and evaluate the effectiveness of risk controls and mitigation strategies.
- Use risk assessment tools and methodologies to support risk-based decision-making.
- Conduct safety audits and implement corrective actions as necessary.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration or a related field.
- Understanding of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and internal controls.
- At least 5 years post qualification experience as a Risk Management Officer, Compliance Officer, or a related role.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management (ERM) and risk assessment methodologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare detailed risk reports.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
Barriers to Success in Role
- Limited or lack of technical knowledge about enterprise risk management (ERM) and risk assessment methodologies.
- Inability to understand corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and internal controls.
