About Organisation:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a Public Limited Liability Company incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act (Cap 110). the Laws of Uganda and in conformity with the Electricity Act, 1999. UEGCL started operation on 1st April 2001 and is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda, with the head office located in Kampala. The mandate of UEGCL is to establish, acquire, maintain and operate electricity generation facilities as well as promote Research and Development in the Electricity generation sector while running the company on sound business principles.
Job Summary: To ensure that the Mechanical elements in the power plant run smoothly to generate power. The Technician checks Mechanical equipment and machine components, tests their operational efficiency and makes repairs wherever necessary and suggests improvement to machines for better performance. The Mechanical technician shall have appropriate engineering knowledge base and keep abreast with the latest developments in the field to enable him/her to evaluate the mechanical condition of machines, troubleshooting/diagnosing problems and where possible propose improvements through an approved modification process.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Brief Description of duties or the responsibilities for the job Planning
- Plans, prioritizes and executes mechanical tasks on daily and weekly basis
- Coordinate work and work with fitters based on the received planned routine work packages
- Ensure implementation of Mechanical outage activities program me
- Monitor and control execution
- Responsible for maintenance of mechanical plant systems
- Supervision of Mechanical fitters, Machine Operators in execution of various maintenance activities in accordance to the standard maintenance practices and procedures while upholding the laid down safety procedures.
- Apply for LV voltage permits and carry out risk assessment for all tasks/activities executed at the plant
- Participate in root cause analysis process of plant failures to establish causes of incidents
- Coordinate with the system engineers to ensure there is adequate spares of the correct specification and quality, equipment and consumables to perform the necessary maintenance activities
- Apply and maintain safe maintenance procedures as well as development and growth of safety culture
- provide inputs of weekly reports to the mechanical supervisor on job tasks.
- Evaluate performance
- Providing guidance, coaching and mentoring of fitters and trainees
Administrative support
- Conduct day to day supervision of all the staff working in a team under his/her leadership
- Complete closed work orders for both standard maintenance instruction and deviations in CMMS/Maximo.
- Ensure safety for both equipment and people working in the team and Mechanical section
- Carry out on spot safety inspections and monitor implementation of mechanical section risk Mitigation measures.
- Provide inputs to risk assessment for and development of risk mitigation measures and strategies
- Prepare weekly maintenance report to the mechanical supervisor for decision making
Functional outputs:
- Measuring and testing equipment’s calibrated and functioning correctly.
- Conduct and implement preventive, breakdown, corrective and condition-based maintenance strategies.
- Ensure Proper housekeeping at any work site.
- Ensure quality control for performance of mechanical maintenance is done.
- Conduct plant inspections and raise any anomaly identified on any plant equipment through CMMS/Maximo.
- Serve as a key resource for safety related issues with the goal of meeting/exceeding OSHA requirements for a safe workplace.
- Prepare/compile and provide inputs work instructions and standard operating instructions in collaboration with the TSO undertake the LOTO procedure.
- Collect maintenance data and records of both maintenance & repair works carried out
- Documenting monthly system health status reports for systems assigned to him/her
- Execute diligently any other assignment given
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Hydropower engineering or related field
Related Job Experience/Qualification: The Experience required to perform this job.
- At Least 3 years’ experience at a power plant, heavy manufacturing industry, processing plant, a major repair workshop or similar work places.
