Our client is a Steel Manufacturing Company based in Jinja, Uganda with a large focus on Steel manufacturing, production and distribution. On behalf of our client we are looking for a competent and experienced Senior Accountant to be based in Jinja, Uganda.
Reports To: The Financial Controller
Duty Station: Jinja, Uganda
Job Summary: The Senior Accountant will play a key role in overseeing and managing all financial and accounting operations of the company. H/She will also be responsible for full-cycle accounting, taxation, banking, and internal controls.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Accounting & Reporting:
- Oversee end-to-end accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, inventory accounting, and bank reconciliations.
- Ensure accurate and timely closing of books of accounts in compliance with IFRS and local accounting standards.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statements) for management and external stakeholders.
- Conduct cost accounting and variance analysis to optimize production costs and improve profitability.
Taxation & Statutory Compliance:
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of VAT, Withholding Tax (WHT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), NSSF, and Corporate Income Tax in compliance with Ugandan tax laws.
- Prepare and submit URA (Uganda Revenue Authority) tax returns, ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements.
- Handle tax audits, reconciliations, and dispute resolutions with tax authorities.
- Provide guidance on tax planning and optimization strategies to minimize tax liabilities legally.
Banking, Treasury & Fund Management:
- Monitor cash flow, fund management, and working capital requirements.
- Manage banking relationships, including loan processing, bank guarantees, LC (Letter of Credit) management, and negotiations for better financing terms.
- Ensure daily bank reconciliations and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Knowledge of 0versee foreign exchange transactions.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
- Establish and enforce strong internal controls to prevent financial fraud, misappropriation, and errors.
- Conduct periodic internal audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Develop and maintain SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for accounting, taxation, and financial operations.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and financial best practices.
MIS & Financial Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze Management Information System (MIS) reports, including budget forecasts, variance analysis, and cost control measures.
- Provide profitability analysis for different product lines, assessing financial performance and identifying improvement areas.
- Support strategic decision-making through data-driven financial insights.
Audit & Risk Management:
- Coordinate with external auditors for statutory audits, tax audits, and compliance reviews.
- Ensure timely submission of audit schedules and compliance with audit recommendations.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks through robust risk assessment frameworks.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Supervise and mentor the accounts team, ensuring high levels of accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism.
- Conduct training sessions to improve accounting skills and knowledge of financial software.
- Assign tasks, set KPIs, and ensure accountability within the department.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), ACCA, CMA or equivalent professional qualification.
- At least 8-10 years of experience in accounting, finance, and taxation, preferably in the steel manufacturing or industrial sector.
- Strong knowledge of Tally ERP/SAP for financial transactions, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Excellent computer skills (MS Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, Macros), Word, and PowerPoint) for financial presentations.
- Sound knowledge of Ugandan tax laws, IFRS, and statutory regulations.
- Ability to do treasury management, banking operations, and cash flow forecasting.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines with high attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with senior management, auditors, and regulatory bodies.
- Prior experience in steel manufacturing, heavy industries, or related manufacturing sectors.
- Exposure to ERP implementation and process automation.
- Knowledge of handling internal and external audits.
- Knowledge of import regulations and inventory management.
Barriers to Success in Role
- Limited or lack of Ugandan tax laws, IFRS, and statutory regulations.
- Failure to have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), ACCA, CMA or equivalent professional qualification.
- Inability to use Tally ERP/SAP systems.
