Job Title:    Mechanical Engineer   

Organisation: Soroti Fruits Limited (SOFTE)

Duty Station: Soroti, Uganda

Reports to: Manager Production & Technical Services

About Organisation:

Soroti Fruits Limited (SOFTE) is a fruit processing plant and a subsidiary of Uganda Development Corporation (UDC). The company will also produce ready to drink fruit juice as well as concentrates from Ugandan produced fruits notably Oranges, Mangoes and Pineapples.

Job Summary:   The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and improvement of mechanical equipment such as conveyor belts, pulping machines, packaging units, and cooling systems. This role includes troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and implementing efficiency upgrades to minimize downtime and increase productivity.

Purpose of the Job: To maintain, repair, and optimize mechanical systems and machinery in the factory to ensure continuous and efficient production while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues in factory equipment.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance to reduce breakdowns.
• Analyze machinery performance and recommend improvements for efficiency.
• Design and implement modifications or upgrades to existing systems.
• Ensure all mechanical systems comply with factory safety regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures.
• Work closely with production teams to identify and resolve operational bottlenecks.
• Train operators and technicians on proper equipment usage and maintenance.
• Maintain detailed records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
• Prepare reports on equipment performance and improvement plans.
• And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by your supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional certifications in mechanical maintenance or machine operation (preferred).
• 4 years of experience in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting industrial machinery, especially food production equipment.
