WWF Uganda Country Office (WWF UCO) works with central and local government agencies, private sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and the local communities to implement its various conservation programmes on Energy and Climate, Forestry and Wildlife, and Freshwater in Uganda.

Job Summary:   The Project Manager is responsible for leading the planning, coordination, monitoring and implementation of the One Health Project in line with WWF UCO strategic objectives and donor requirements. Numerous zoonotic diseases including Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Marburg, anthrax, rabies, brucellosis and trypanosomiasis have occurred in the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL) with recent outbreaks of EVD, M-Pox, COVID19 and anthrax. The human-wildlife interface is a critical control point when considering the prevention of zoonotic disease with pandemic potential. The drivers of disease spillover events are multiple and often not well understood, but potential contributors include behavioral, socio-economic, environmental, climatic, agricultural and ecological factors.

The “Strengthening One Health-based PPR in the Greater Virunga Landscape Project” aims to address capacity gaps that exist in all three priorities of the Pandemic Fund, i.e. Surveillance, Laboratory Systems and Workforce Strengthening, using a One Health approach. The project will also strengthen enabling conditions, transboundary and regional coordination, and cross-sectoral engagement, particularly for public-private partnerships for holistic and sustainable One Health-

based PPR.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   In this regard, the Project Manager, One Health Project will:

• Contribute to Country Office strategy development and implementation.
• Contribute/make input and or lead Country Office Annual Work Plan development including integrating project specific interventions.
• Support WWF-UCO in developing projects in the respective areas based on assessments and other related studies.
• Assess and recommend sustainable interventions for project implementation.
• Contribute towards the design and implementation of projects aimed at mitigating human and climate induced impacts.
• Work with partners and experts to promote sustainable project implementation and management.
• In collaboration with the Landscape Coordinator, support the capacity strengthening initiatives for WWF-UCO staff and partners.
• Ensure coordination with WWF-UCO thematic programs, and promote synergies with various projects and programs.
• Manage budgets, resources, and timelines.
• Ensure that the project is implemented in line with existing ESSF guidelines and standards.
• Support the development of funding opportunities as part of a wider WWF-UCO fundraising agenda.
• Promote WWF-UCO projects among strategic constituencies to grow resources for program development and delivery.
• Support WWF-UCO in undertaking research, innovation and development of sustainability tools to promote project related technologies and practices for improved environmental and social performance.
• Collaborate with the Regional Office of Africa (ROA) thematic leads, and the WWF-UCO conservation team to build relationships with other environmental and development NGOs, Government Ministries and Departments (MDAS), the academia and colleagues within the WWF Network to develop and share latest thinking on One Health, natural resources management and climate mitigation and adaptation practices, strategies and tools.
• Interact with the global WWF network, respective thematic groups and practices to bring in global perspectives to the national context and promote lessons learnt and best practices.
• Support local, national and international processes on One Health, and other conservation approaches.
• Support national and international advocacy relevant to the project.
• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including local communities, government bodies, intergovernmental organizations such as GVTC and EAC, and partner organizations.
• Facilitate workshops, meetings, and discussions to promote the project and gather input from diverse groups.
• Represent WWF in policy discussions, conferences, and other forums to advance the project agenda, as appropriate.
• Ensure effective grants management and sub grantee capacity development.
• Work with the M&E Department to monitor and evaluate project interventions with national and local stakeholders in line with the WWF standards and guidelines.
• Contribute to the WWF-UCO planning, implementation, reporting and learning activities.
• Motivate, inspire and build capacity of line staff
• Manage the performance of the project team.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Health Sciences, Biosafety, or a related field is required. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field and training in project planning and management is considered an added advantages.
• Candidates must have at least seven years of relevant experience implementing donor-funded projects, with proven practical expertise in project coordination, management, and research.
• Fluency in English (both oral and written), excellent organizational skills, and the ability to multitask under limited supervision are essential.
• Strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills are required, along with a demonstrated ability to handle complex processes and integrate information effectively.
• Candidates must have excellent knowledge of global environmental standards and frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement, SDGs, and Uganda’s National Development Plans.
• The role involves coordinating capacity-building initiatives, maintaining effective working relationships in multicultural environments, and managing priorities, budgets, and work plans.
